For my seminar, reread this excellent article by Lisa Song and James Temple on the creation of "ghost credits" in carbon offset programs, including on tribal lands. propublica.org/article/the-c…
Orphaned again!
It was a pleasure to podcast with @tommctague on @TheseTimesPod for the last couple of years. We started with the coronation and ended with a lot of Donald Trump. Thanks very much indeed to @freddiesayers and to everyone who listened. All the comments were much appreciated.
Here for the new Jia Zhanke content

Been wondering what he's been up to. It felt like he disappeared for a while.
Jia Zhangke’s 'Caught by the Tides,' opening in theaters Friday, captures one of the great treasures of contemporary cinema.

It is very easy to get oriented in Vienna as a newcomer, not just bc the Viennese will tell you all about the place in conversation but because the city upholds a long and illustrious tradition of publicly available social statistics.

From the official Swiss tourism magazine 1977 issue on the "Walser people." I am pretty sure I shopped at the same village store on a visit to Bosco/Gurin in 2023.
Reading this, haven't felt this sane in a while. Vindicated every hunch I've held since Netflix moved into the neighborhood. nplusonemag.com/issue-49/ess…
I like that the NLR keeps publishing Streeck even though self-identified German speaking lefties won't touch the guy with a 10-foot pole. A short essay on the gap in reception btw the two communities would be interesting.

In 2015, we republished Pope Francis's second encyclical, in which he takes aim at the heart of the world’s problems: capitalism.
It has been, and will remain, free to download.

A sad birthday for me today: the National Endowment for the Humanities (@NEHgov) has terminated our grant for publishing Ukrainian literature in English translation effective immediately. This was the first such federal grant we received for our publications in 40+ years. Per the letter, "NEH has reasonable cause to terminate your grant in light of the fact that the NEH is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President’s agenda."
Since the launch of the series 3.5 years ago, we managed to bring out 14 volumes of outstanding Ukrainian literature in translation. We will continue doing what we can to the best of our ability given the resources that we have. But—over three years into russia's war—it will be a lot more difficult, as the entire publications team consists only of me and one editor. We were hoping to hire another part-time editor to help us with the workload, but that won't be possible anymore.
If you would like to help at this difficult time, please consider one of the following:
1. Donate yourself if you can: see the link in the next post of the thread.
2. If your company/employer has a social responsibility program, invite them to support our work at this time—they can contact me for details.
3. If you know someone who is wealthy enough to meaningfully support us, please ask them to do so—I'd be happy to talk about this with them.
4. Buy our books for yourself, your friends, family, or colleagues—see the link in the next post of the thread.
5. Invite your local public or university library to buy our books.
Thank you to all who have stood with us—and with Ukraine—through thick and thin.
