It's still one of the best songs about death ever written, and I sort of hate the fact that it was by a pretentious git like Sting. youtube.com/watch?v=4LdUme7Q…

Nearly every single song on this album is emotional dynamite, ready to blow your heart up into something grander and more generous, and its best track doesn't even have a name: youtube.com/watch?v=KA2n60No…

In other words, the SEC valued the rights of shareholders to not have millions of dollars wasted on shareholder proposals submitted by activists who own only 100 shares and couldn’t care less about the effect of the proposal on other shareholders.
Today, the SEC proposed to eliminate a basic shareholder right—the right to submit proposals on matters that shareholders consider important to the company. This is the latest move on the part of the SEC to silence shareholders. Link in the comments.

YouTube playlists are now your only friend.
Local classic rock station is playing Toto’s “Africa.” I change to the alternative rock station, which is playing Weezer’s “Africa.”

Chad Smith, Flea, and Frusciante are all outstanding musicians, so whether someone thinks the RHCP are good often depends on their opinion of Kiedis, the archetypal Hollywood ‘lost boy’ who was palling around with his failed-actor, drug-dealer father from age 12. The sort of sad, poignant character Kiedis represents and the weirdness of the milieu he developed out of in LA is less recognizable culturally now, and his persona is interpreted, maybe because of social media, as a specific sort or performance or affectation that misplaces its origin. However, if LA from the 80s or 90s is a place you have a passing acquaintance with or just occupied space in your imagination the music can be evocative of what at the time was the seat of our cultural imagination but also a place with a lot of sadness, depravity, and desperation. I’d also add Kiedis’ persona was less off putting then because culturally there wasn’t an implicit cultural demand for affirmation and people misshapen by the sorts of contingencies Kiedis was made less of an imposition and as a result were much more sympathetic.
the largest rapid internet cultural revisionism may be the red hot chili peppers. at the time, they were probably the most universally agreed upon "good band" among men. now the internet only discusses them as though theyre obviously horrible. its clearly indicative of something

Well, much like Bart Simpson, I can tell you at least TWO things wrong with the title to THE NAKED LUNCH.
What's the best movie *title*, irrespective of the quality of the actual movie itself? I nominate "Dude, Where's my Car?" - it tells you so much about what the movie is like: it's a comedy, it stars at least one (probably two), surfer dudes, a car is going to be misplaced

The biggest miracle of all is he took his idea to make a two-movie version of LOTR to Bob Shay at New Line Cinema, and Shay said "Peter, why not make this three movies instead of two?"
The story of how the LOTR movies got made is an under-rated miracle. Peter Jackson was a schlock horror indie dork with 1 serious movie on his resume (Heavenly Creatures) when he pitched the Lord of the Rings trilogy He pulled in insanely talented VFX artists by basically saying "hey, want to work on Lord of the Rings?" He made the trilogy on a comparative shoe-string budget (less than $100 million per movie). He was absolutely terrified of the movies crashing and burning so he kept close to the book (especially for the first movie). He thought "we need the existing fans to come, we have no hope of success without the fans". Everything came together for the LOTR movies, from tech advances to financing to the perfect actors. It was a project of love from the perfect director who was in love with his island home which just so happened to be the best spot on Earth to stand in for Middle Earth. If you believe in miracles, the LOTR movies were a miracle. Every perfect thing came together at the right moment with the right people.
