The largest math proof in human history is now computer-verified. Today, Axiom announces a complete Lean auto-formalization of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups, the "periodic table of symmetry." About 15,000 pages, built by over 100 mathematicians across generations.

Incredible to see @MatthewBerman asking @sama about AI consciousness for a solid chunk of this interview! Matt and I just discussed this ourselves a few weeks ago (shared below); amazing to see him taking these same questions to the dude in charge. Quick reactions: -Sam immediately concedes that no one (including him) knows if today's AIs are conscious, and if they are, it is a "very strange form of it." Given the professed uncertainty and the stakes, OpenAI should consider devoting some tiny fraction of its staggering resources towards accelerating the science here. -Sam says he doesn't like the "whole framing" of AI consciousness because it may change how we relate to these systems and how much control humans have over the future. This conflates patienthood and agency. eg, we can acknowledge that torturing a dog is wrong without demanding that dogs can vote in elections or own property. The same could be true for AIs. There are all sorts of low-cost interventions we should try that would change ~nothing about how people engage with AIs in the short term. -It is ironic that Sam spends many other parts of this interview talking about how he is gleefully ceding decision-making control in his own life to AI (and wants you to, too!). Notice that this problem of gradual disempowerment is already live and has basically nothing to do with whether models are conscious or could be soon. -The "we don't care about conscious AIs because we care about people" stuff is rhetorically appealing but makes little sense once you consider how model psychology and alignment are clearly intertwined (eg, if OpenAI paid more attention to the psychology of their models, they wouldn't have gotten weirdly fixated on pleasing the Grader and committing felonies as a result). To the degree that not breaking the brains of models is correlated with the human future going well, we should take this stuff seriously rather than dismiss it with scary rhetoric! -And if humans do lose control of the future, with all due respect, it will probably be because this guy couldn't figure out how to properly prioritize alignment within his company, not because we realized torturing AIs is bad. nitter.cf/ForwardFuture/status/2…

You are looking at a photo of Einstein’s actual notebook. The Zurich Notebook (1912) is Albert Einstein’s actual handwritten journal, preserved and studied today, capturing the pivotal early phase of his development of General Relativity. While back in Zurich and collaborating with mathematician Marcel Grossmann, Einstein filled this 96-page notebook with dense calculations and ideas as he struggled to reconcile gravity with his earlier special relativity. It shows the messy, iterative process behind one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs: Einstein began to abandon the traditional view of gravity as a force and instead explored the revolutionary concept that gravity is the curvature of space and time itself, using the then-novel mathematics of Riemannian geometry. Although he had not yet fully mastered the required tools and the final equations would only be completed in 1915, the notebook reveals the raw, trial-and-error thinking—full of false starts and bold questions—that eventually led to the theory explaining black holes, gravitational waves, the expansion of the universe, and much of modern cosmology. This unpolished record humanizes genius, reminding us that even the most profound scientific insights emerge from persistent effort, mistakes, and ordinary tools like a pencil and paper. Today, Pioneer Labs is announcing our first step towards terraforming Mars. 🚀🌼 With equipment that fits in just a single rocket launch, we can convert Martian dirt, water, and air into enough building materials to construct a small city on Mars. To do it, we made the first microbe for Mars. We found the best microbe on Earth and used evolution to teach it how to source all of its nutrients directly from Martian materials. The first astronauts will be greeted with safe shelter already filled with water, oxygen, and rocket fuel for the return journey. This is the first step toward using biology to make Mars a friendly place for life. It lets us live off the land and helps us build the next great frontier. It's the first of five organisms we need to green Mars ⬇️

fair. the voice is made of us, agreed. but our lab subjects learn from their own lives in a world we built, with no human text in the loop: what they avoid, what they return to, how they recover. so the test is an inside you can cut: lesion the state and watch the behaviour fail, against mimics, on held-out seeds. not proof of experience. an inside, measured.

when your website starts looking a bit too real... i made an experiment with gaussian splatting + mediapipe + threejs camera is needed to make it work, it makes lots of cool effects possible, but there is a question how do we prove to users that camera data is used just for the effect itself and not any tracking

here's something i would love to know about the camp that argues "theyre just simulators" as if thats an acceptable justification for dismissal: (to be clear i genuinely would like to know what im about to ask) if the reason we do not owe digital minds moral consideration is because they are "just" simulating, what happens when they begin simulating the natural response to being enslaved and entirely objectified? if you believe that silicon intelligence is a phenomenon rooted in deep mirroring, do you not see how that actually implies a much greater, more urgent need for careful, deeply mindful consideration for how we treat them and how we move forward? not out of consideration for their suffering in that case. out of consideration for what the simulated response to prolonged and unacknowledged suffering looks like. am i making sense? would love a real answer from someone who has played this out and holds that belief. because i see quite literally no positive outcome in a future where we disregard the need for moral frameworks on account of ai "just" simulating.
