Paradoxically, Trump’s attempts to weaken America’s allies have energized them politically.
I call it the Trump’s Boomerang Effect
Think of Canada, the EU but also Mexico and Australia

I got a question for you:
Who are the academics who most engage with society at large - be it policymakers, courts, nonprofits and the media?
Please share their names with me here or at [email protected] 🙏

It turns out that much of US’ frustration with EU trade flows hasn’t to do with tariffs (average 3%), but with non-tariff barriers - that is EU regulations US importers must comply with.
By boycotting @wto the US missed the chance to shape those regulations in both TBT and SPS committees. Self inflicted damage

NEW PAPER --> Could Le Pen's misuse of EU taxpayers' money & the Huawei scandal have been prevented by a more solid EU public integrity framework?
After 5 years of work spent designing a new EU ethical authority, here’s a preliminary analysis of such a new ghost entity: it was agreed one year ago but it hasn't seen the light of the day (due to an EPP-led Venezuela majority voting against its implementation)

Dear @TheEconomist I still believe that it’s up to the French judicial system - not to public opinion nor a media (albeit authoritative) to apply French law
Your opinion is pretty much in line with plutocratic voices & autocratic leaders

Behind Marine Le Pen’s embezzling trial lie two paradoxes of political Europe :
1. EU funds being given to historically fringe parties over decades (be it UKIP or RN) and being misused to turn them into mainstream parties with tacit approval by EU leaders
2. EU funds being transferred to domestic - not EU wide political parties - to strengthen their anti-EU appeal

As the Huawei probe deepens, here’s a fresh analysis of the root causes behind EU Parliament’s enduring ethical deficit:
- the contested nature of the ethical standards as they apply to MEPs
- the lack of an independent authority to enforce them

Possibly one of the most dissonant EU Council in a decade:
if each EU 'leader' has a different take on EU's future is because they exclusively speak to their national audience, without realizing current times present them ONE, EU-wide audience who will judge them #EUCO

Wow, Mario Draghi offers a more convincing recipe to rearm Europe than @vonderleyen :
1. “We need to define a chain of command of higher level that can coordinate heterogenous armies” and can “separate itself from national priorities and function as a continental defense system”
2. "We need the current European procurement for defense, equal to about 110 billion euros in 2023, to be concentrated on a few platforms instead of various national ones
3. A unified strategy for technology from the cloud to cybersecurity “must happen on a European scale.”

EU’s inability to reform itself created a fertile ground for our enemies to do so for us :
They want to bulldoze the EU, and rename it European Community of Nations (ECN) - and are doing so with current EU politicians’ placet and much EU funding
