Monemvasia at Dusk
There is something magical about arriving in Monemvasia as the afternoon begins to fade. The medieval settlement is built into the enormous rock rising from the coast, and as the light softens, the stone buildings take on a warm glow.
Inside the fortress town, narrow cobbled streets wind between old houses, churches, shops and small courtyards.
At dusk, explore:
โข The medieval lanes
โข The main gateway
โข Historic churches
โข The Upper Town
โข The old fortress walls
โข Small restaurants and courtyards
โข Views across the Myrtoan Sea
Monemvasia is particularly enjoyable once you stop thinking about distances and simply walk.
The streets are made for wandering, with little passages opening into unexpected corners and old buildings appearing around every turn.
Climb towards the Upper Town if you have the energy. The views from above are spectacular, especially when the surrounding sea begins to reflect the evening light.
Then return to the lower town for dinner.
As the sun disappears, Monemvasia becomes quieter and more intimate. The stone streets are illuminated, the restaurants settle into their evening rhythm and the massive rock seems to rise even more dramatically above the sea.
It is worth staying late here.
Monemvasia is beautiful during the day, but dusk brings out something different. The crowds thin, the colours deepen, and the medieval atmosphere becomes almost tangible.
Is Monemvasia on your bucket list?

The sight of one of Ireland's native Oak saplings was once a welcome relief for a lone traveller ๐ฑ
These little trees will grow to be great and ancient cornerstones of biodiversity supporting countless species of insects, some entirely reliant on the Oak tree, that live amongst their branches and even sometimes sheltered within their bark and wood. The larvae of the Goat Moth will burrow quite deep into and old Oak and safely stay there and feed for a number of years ๐ฆ
But before they reach this magnificent stage a person beset by evil fairies, demons or other supernatural entities could find safety by marking a circle around the little tree and encasing themself within the protective energy of the Oak ๐ณ๐ช
Then, doing their best to ignore the frustrated howls of the spirits, they would wait until morning and the safety of the rising sun ๐ป๐
