Péter Magyar sought to bring European leaders to Budapest for the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution.
But of the big names, only von der Leyen and Costa showed up. Merz, Macron, Meloni, Tusk and Zelenskyy did not.
@EuroSandor explains what happened.

Big news: Hungary's new government has signalled readiness to sanction Russia's Patriarch Kirill, long protected by Viktor Orbán's veto.
A "mini" package of sanctions is already being prepared in Brussels.

Polish press agency PAP reports PIS MEPs boycotted today's ECR group meeting because they wanted to include Fidesz in the group and this resulted in tensions with Italian FdI MEPs. But: "There is no question of leaving ECR. Negotiations are simply ongoing," the source told PAP.
Orbán thinks Brussels politics was disgusting and he used very descriptive language: "Slyness there is a slimy, slimy, snail-like, slimy medium. It is not our world that is there. "
Viktor Orbán calls the European Court of Justice "the court of George Soros" in his weekly radio speech after the @EUCourtPress issued a daily fine for Hungary for non-compliance with migration rules.
The most likely outcome @ManfredWeber visit to Hungary tomorrow is: 1 KDNP Mep leaves and 7 TISZA Meps join the EPP group. Why:
- HU gov minister Gulyás made it clear today that they don't see Orbanist KDNP Mep @HolvenyiGyorgy sitting together with enemy TISZA members.
- TISZA joining EPP is almost a done deal, they need to finalize the process.
He added, that there are two solutions:
- KDNP boss Semjén will meet Weber tomorrow morning to "clarify things".
- Weber maths: losing 1, gaining 7, and have a strong, anti Orbán party in Hu is good.
A very good summary from Ildikó Csuhaj from Hungary: atv.hu/belfold/20240613/semj…
Important!! NATO acknowledges that Hungary is unwilling to financially or militarily support Ukraine. In return, Hungary is not blocking any efforts by other NATO allies that differ from the HU position - this is the essence of the Stolenberg-Orban meeting in Budapest.
My takeaways for #Hungary EU elex:
*2024 could mark the start of the erosion of Orban's power, Fidesz-KDNP got their worst result since 2006, 11 mandates, down from 13.
*Still Orban has more mandates than the whole opposition and two years to prepare for the next elections.
*The success of the Tisza Party means Fidesz has a right-wing challenger.
*In Brussels, 7 Tisza MEPs will likely join influential @EPPGroup - this will put pressure on Fidesz to find a political group or be sidelined again in Brussels.
Some personal news: After being an EU correspondent for 11 years, I started to work as deputy editor-in-chief at @euronews new HQ in Brussels. My focus will be on EU news, Europe, politics, we will be better and faster and keep our traditional editorial values. Wish me good luck!
Brussels did stop Orbán at the end.
