In a piece for @ForeignAffairs’s website, @ryanl_hass and I argue that President Trump’s mishandling of China policy has paradoxically created political space for a new, more durable strategy to emerge. foreignaffairs.com/united-st… [1/15]

When AI comes for Lao Gan Ma, you know Skynet is right around the corner
Rumors that chili maker Lao Gan Ma laid off 500+ workers due to AI have gone viral in China. Beneath Beijing’s positive messaging, many ordinary Chinese people are worried about AI and jobs. Lao Gan Ma recently touted a new AI-powered chili inspection system that uses high-speed industrial cameras that significantly outperform manual inspection. A stat about the company using this AI system to reduce human inspectors from 600 to 48 went viral on Chinese social media. The iconic, family-run company pushed back. But if you look at the data, the company has reduced headcount from 2,912 to 740 in the past few years while earning record revenues. Original story: m.jiemian.com/article/152425…

"You wouldn't know it if you live in the USA or consume US media...but the fight between EVs and ICEs is basically over. Internal combustion is on it's way out. First it'll look slow, then fast. Fleet turnover will lag sales. But ALL the growth globally is in EVs." -@JesseJenkins
NEW | EV Adoption is booming around the world The Hormuz crisis once again revealed the risks of an energy system reliant on fossil fuels and countries are taking notice. Growing EV fleets have saved oil importers more than $20 billion since the start of the war.

I graduated law school and moved to China to work for a Chinese law firm at around the same time as Katie Zacharia did the same. Here are some of my experiences…
Q: You said Zacharia is an attorney. Where did she pass the bar exam? What state? ZACHARIA: When I moved to China

Maybe more Americans will go to China to study. The numbers now are dismal compared to 15 years ago, especially next to how many Chinese students are in the US. Whatever you think of China, we need more Americans who have an on-the-ground feel for it and know the language.
1/ Polling by different organizations captures a shift in America's national mood toward China. The shift toward a more positive view of China is bipartisan and most pronounced among younger Americans. But why? (🧵) nytimes.com/2026/09/23/us/po…

COLUMN: Rumor has it that China, a key factor stopping oil prices from going ballistic, is again buying lots of crude. In reality, Beijing is still importing significantly less than before the war started. What’s changing is *where* it’s buying. @Opinion bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

Was a pleasure chatting with Gabriel Crossley for this piece about what makes food safety so hard to get right – from the US' cyclospora-tainted veggies, to China's formaldehyde-dipped cabbages. Two big issues: extreme cost pressure, and complex, diffuse agri-food supply chains.
Few things anger China's public as much as food-safety scandals. Once, it was milk powder. This time it is the cabbages that customers are avoiding bit.ly/4yqqcHT Photo: Xinhua News Agency/eyevine

It's been a week since the apocalyptic tsunami-like floods in Nepal. I spoke to scientists about what led to this event, survivors trying to grapple with the aftermath, and families still looking for their missing loved ones. foreignpolicy.com/2026/09/01…

This sort of monitoring, showing severe stress on the rockshelf that caused the Nepal/Tibetan flood disaster, should be funded, made routine, openly accessible, and shared intergovernmentally for high-risk areas globally. This shows radar-detected deformation of multiple metres precisely at the sheer site in the weeks prior to its collapse.
#NISAR captured clear precursory deformation before the 2026 #Nepal ice–rock avalanche. SAR pixel-offset tracking reveals meter-scale cumulative motion in the eventual source area. The 3-D views further highlight how the deformation was concentrated on the steep source slope.

The @nytimes reported Monday on the global pause in immigrant visa interviews at US embassies and consulates. A new legal filing cites that story and challenges the State Department's rationale for the worldwide pause. Gift link to the @nytimes story: nytimes.com/2026/08/24/us/po…

The science is clear: the Himalayas, as a new mountain range (geologically speaking) is fragile, and large-scale infrastructure and climate change are making it disaster-prone. Why aren’t governments listening? 🧵 A thread by our South Asia Managing Editor Omair Ahmad. (1/11)

Heartbroken for everyone impacted by the glacier collapse and flood near Gyirong. FWIW it is the 2nd largest border crossing for people & the largest port for trade between China and Nepal by value. Here's one place to donate. Welcome further recs. directrelief.org/2026/08/nep…

This is where the flash superflood on the Nepal-Tibet border today first began. From an altitude of 17,000 ft on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, a ~2,000 ft-wide chunk of glacier ice snapped off and fell ~4,000 ft to the valley below, generating an impact 6.3% as powerful as the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and causing a Magnitude 5.2 seismic event. Upon impact, this massive ice chunk was then pulverized into a violent 100+ ft-tall surge of glacier water, rocks, and mud that flowed into the nearby Trishuli River. Funneled by Nepal’s extremely steep and jagged terrain, the resulting flood wave became an unsurvivable wall of water and debris for the immediate communities downstream.
