The dread sorcerer Vakiron has cursed them to become Gemgeas Kobolds. Physically and mentally pliant to their master's wishes. Helpless to resist the throbbing of their own needs to be of use and derive pleasure and release, ever fortifying the curse further while also giving them momentary relief from it. Their "Gem" state is simply how they sleep. Kobolds, after all, must work, and indeed they work well ;3
