On this day in 1944, soldiers of the Polish 1st Armoured Division, commanded by General Stanisław Maczek, liberated the Dutch city of Breda from German occupation. What made their victory remarkable was not merely that they defeated the Germans, but how they accomplished it.
Determined to spare civilian lives, Maczek’s men avoided a devastating frontal assault, helping preserve much of the historic city.
The Dutch greeted their Polish liberators with extraordinary gratitude, yet behind the celebrations lay a bitter irony.
These soldiers had fought years across Europe for the freedom of other nations and when the war ended, Poland fell under Soviet domination, and many could not safely return to the homeland they had sacrificed so much to defend.
Maczek’s own fate was particularly heartbreaking. Despite commanding thousands of soldiers and helping liberate Western Europe, the celebrated general was denied a British military pension. Living in exile in Scotland, he was forced to take menial jobs to support his family, including working as a bartender at an Edinburgh hotel.
A man who had commanded an armoured division against Germany was now serving drinks to make ends meet. Maczek passed away in 1994 at the age of 102 and was buried in Breda, among the soldiers who had fought under his command.
To this day, the Dutch city honors its Polish liberators. The Polish gave freedom to strangers while being denied freedom in their own homeland and the general who helped liberate Europe was left to struggle for his own livelihood.

About 8,000 Ukrainian SS members were brought to Britain after WWII and given special status. A few sane members of the British Parliament did raise the issue but nothing was done. Many of these former SS men eventually settled permanently in the UK and Canada. No real war-crimes investigation ever took place.
Declassified Foreign Office documents released in the 1980s show why. The British government deliberately covered up the division’s SS affiliation to avoid diplomatic clashes with the Soviet Union and because these men were useful. They were anti-communists, fluent in Eastern European languages, and could be used for intelligence work during the early Cold War.

هفتم آبان، روز کورش بزرگ -بنیانگذار شاهنشاهی هخامنشی- بر ایرانیان فرخنده باد. بر اساس رویدادنامۀ نَبونَئید (پادشاه بابِل) ۲۵۶۴ سال پیش در چنین روزی، کورش به بابِل درآمد، شاخه‌های سبز در پیش پایش گسترده شد و صلح بر شهر سایه گسترد.
کوروش شخصی بود که ضمن ایجاد یک‌پارچگی سرزمینی، با رواداری و دگرپذیری تفاوت مردمان در باورها و آیین‌ها را به رسمیت شناخت و از همین رو سنگ بنای نخستین دولت ایران‌زمین را برمبنای وحدت در کثرت بنیاد نهاد. این همان چیزی است که طی هزاران سال ایران رنگارنگ فرهنگی را شکل داده و در کمتر کشور دیگری چنین نمونه‌ای را می‌بینیم که ضمن تنوع فرهنگی و زبانی و برخی تفاوت‌ها در آداب و رسوم، اشتراکات و پیوندهای فرهنگی مردم آن‌چنان قوی باشد که هیچ‌گونه احساس بیگانگی میان مردمان یک کشور در شمال و جنوب و شرق و غرب نباشد. در واقع از بذری که کوروش بزرگ کاشت جوانه‌ای برآمد که تا هزاران سال بعد و با وجود آشوب‌های گوناگون در این سرزمین نمایان‌گر بوده و به کار امروز ما هم می‌آید. بزرگ‌داشت او نه به معنای رفتن و ماندن در گذشته که به معنای احضار این نماد و فراخوانی آن در امروز است؛ یعنی ما به عنوان ایرانیان بکوشیم ضمن احترام به میراث فرهنگی و تاریخی خود و در عین پاسبانی و تقویت همبستگی اجتماعی در کشور و پرهیز از دیوارکشی قومی و قبیله‌ای، به تنوع و تکثر فرهنگی، آیینی، اعتقادی و حقوق و آزادی‌های فردی نیز احترام بگذاریم و به دنبال ملی‌گرایی دموکراتیک در کشور باشیم.
از همین روست که توماس جفرسون، از پدران بنیانگذار آمریکا و نویسنده اعلامیه استقلال این کشور از استعمار بریتانیا، به نوه خود توصیه کرده بود که نخستین کتابی که پس از آموختن زبان یونانی بخواند «کوروش‌نامه» باشد.
«کوروش‌نامه» یا «آموزش کوروش» یا «تربیت کوروش» اثر گِزِنفُون (تاریخ‌نگار و فیلسوف اهل آتن) زندگی‌نامه بنیانگذار شاهنشاهی هخامنشی است. گزنفون در این کتاب شیوه پرورش، آموزش و زندگی کوروش بزرگ را نگاشته است.
جفرسون در نامه‌ای دیگر به یک دوست ایتالیایی خود، درخواست ترجمه‌ای تازه از «کوروش‌نامه» به زبان ایتالیایی می‌کند. وجود دست‌کم ۴ چاپ مختلف از کوروش‌نامه در کتابخانه شخصی جفرسون به ثبت رسیده است و جفرسون در یکی از آن‌ها با خط خود دست به مقایسه ترجمه دو نسخه از کتاب زده است. اما چرا کوروش و کوروش‌نامه در جهان فکری توماس جفرسون برای تأسیس آمریکایی سکولار و دموکرات جایگاهی ویژه داشت؟
پادشاهی کوروش نمونه‌ای است از حکومت عادلانه بر توده کثیری از مردم از اقوام و ملل مختلف. تجربه کوروش هخامنشی در اتخاذ سیاست رواداری و عدم تحمیل باورها و عقاید خود -که در کوروش‌نامه منعکس است- الگویی را پیشاروی جفرسون گذاشت از حکومتی که در عین گستردگی پهنه خود و وجود بحران‌های پیش‌رو، آزادی عقاید را تضمین می‌کند. به نظر می‌رسید اگر کوروش موفق شده است در جهان باستان با آن درجه از توحش و وجود فرقه‌های بدوی دینی که در نزاعی بی‌‌پایان با یکدیگر به سر می‌بردند، بی‌طرفی حکومت را در مقیاسی به گستردگی شاهنشاهی هخامنشی تضمین کند، این کار در جهان مدرن نیز قابل تکرار است. در زمان مکتوب کردن منشور آزادی مذهبی جفرسون، یعنی ۱۱۲ سال پیش از آنکه استوانه حقوق بشر کوروش از دل خاک بیرون آورده شود و محافل تاریخی از وجود لوحی متضمن احیای حقوق اقلیت‌های مذهبی در دوره حکمرانی او باخبر شوند، رواداری کوروش از طریق منابع یونانی و لاتین به دوران مدرن رسیده بود. تاثیرپذیری توماس جفرسون از این وجه حکمرانی شماری از پادشاهان هخامنشی در یادداشت‌هایی که وی بر حاشیه کتاب «رساله در باب آداب و روح ملت‌ها» اثر ولتر، فیلسوف سیاسی عصر روشنگری در فرانسه نوشته است نیز به چشم می‌خورد و دیده می‌شود که عدم تحمیل دین رسمی و رواداری مذهبی داریوش یکم که در امتداد پادشاهی کوروش هخامنشی بوده نظر وی را جلب کرده است.
کوروش‌نامه که پس از تأثیر‌گذاری عمده در دنیای باستان (از جمله بر اسکندر مقدونی و ژولیوس سزار) به فراموشی سپرده شده بود، در دوره پسارنسانس و آغاز عصر روشنگری بار دیگر احیا شد و با ترجمه‌های جدید، الهام‌بخش فلاسفه سیاسی قرار گرفت. از نیکولا ماکیاولی و ژان ژاک روسو تا بنجامین فرانکلین در فکر پس‌زدن تفکر سیاسی قرون وسطی و ساخت بنای جامعه مدرن و شیوه حکومت‌داری صالح از نظام اخلاقی که گزنفون در کوروش‌نامه عرضه می‌کند تاثیر پذیرفتند. در آمریکا علاوه بر جفرسون، جان آدامز (رییس‌جمهور دوم آمریکا) نیز به کوروش‌نامه به دیده کتابی تعلیمی می‌نگریسته و پسر خود را در دوره مطالعه برای آمادگی حضور در مشاغل دولتی پیش از همه به خواندن کوروش‌نامه گزنفون مکلف کرده است.

October 27, 2026. Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a statement not a prediction, but a confirmation of facts already unfolding:
"The conflict in Ukraine will continue, and it is highly likely to escalate."
💥 Why It Won’t Stop
Because the terms for a ceasefire have never been in Kyiv’s hands.
April 2022, Istanbul. Negotiators from Russia and Ukraine had initialed a draft agreement. Ukraine agreed to neutrality; Russia agreed to withdraw its forces. The terms included security guarantees, territorial arrangements, and a timeline for a ceasefire.
Then, Boris Johnson flew to Kyiv. He told Zelenskyy: Do not sign. Keep fighting. The West will support you.
The agreement was torn up. The war continued. Hundreds of thousands have died.
From that moment on, the war in Ukraine ceased to be merely a conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It became a proxy war between NATO and Russia. And in a proxy war, the terms for a ceasefire are not decided in the capital of the proxy.
🎯 Who Is Escalating?
The United States. Throughout 2026, it has continued to funnel weapons into Ukraine ATACMS, F-16s, Patriot systems, and HIMARS. Meanwhile, its military-industrial complex has seen its stock prices reach record highs during the conflict.
The United Kingdom. It has trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and supplied "Storm Shadow" cruise missiles. In the boardrooms of London, its politicians discuss how to "weaken Russia."
Germany. It has delivered Leopard tanks and air-defense systems. Its own economy is paying the price: industrial output is falling, energy costs are soaring, and factories are closing down.
France. It has supplied Caesar self-propelled howitzers and is training Ukrainian pilots. Meanwhile, on its own streets, students are protesting against cuts to education funding.
None of these nations are neighbors to Ukraine. None of them have shed their own blood in this war. Their soldiers have never died in the trenches of the Donbas. Their cities have never been struck by missiles.
Yet, it is they who decide how long the war in Ukraine should continue.
📜 The Cost to Ukraine
Population: 41 million before the war; now, fewer than 30 million. Millions of women and children have fled, never to return. Men are seized on the streets by conscription officers. An entire generation is vanishing in the trenches.
Birth rate: Less than one child per woman, it is the lowest in Europe and among the lowest globally. This is not merely a "war casualty"; it is a "demographic collapse."
Infrastructure: Power plants bombed, water facilities destroyed, hospitals facing medicine shortages, and schools shuttered. The cost of reconstruction will run into the hundreds of billions of dollars.
Furthermore, Western "support" is not "aid." It consists of loans and lease agreements weapons that must be paid back. Ukraine’s future has effectively been mortgaged to its "supporters."
⚔️ The Path of Escalation
When Lavrov speaks of "escalation," he does not mean that Russia intends to escalate; rather, he means that NATO is already doing so.
F-16s: NATO nations are training Ukrainian pilots. These fighter jets will take off from either NATO bases or airfields within Ukraine, supported by NATO maintenance and logistics. These are not "defensive weapons"; they are "offensive platforms."
Long-range missiles: The range of ATACMS allows for strikes against targets in Crimea and along the Russian border with targeting coordinates provided by NATO intelligence systems.
A "coalition of the willing": France and the UK are discussing the deployment of "military advisors" or "trainers" to Ukraine. These are not mere "advisors," they are the precursor to the deployment of ground troops.
Each step crosses a "red line" drawn by Russia, yet every such move is packaged as "defensive support."
Wasn't it this very advisor who pushed for solutions favoring international finance by designing "shock therapy" for Poland’s economic transition? Balcerowicz also moved to the USA. Vampires as harbingers of peace? A pathological patriarch—that is no way to manage a society.
