IC 5070 — the Pelican Nebula. It and the North America Nebula are one cloud. A dark cloud in front cuts it in two, and we named the halves. The bright rim is an ionization front, eroding outward. The pillars are what's holding out. 1,800 ly away, and temporary.

In these cosmic captures, the Lion Nebula is the mane attraction 🦁 A dying star casts off its outer layers to create this intricate structure of gas and dust. Scientists think that it will disperse in about 10,000 years... which is very short, in astronomical terms. ⬇️

The Perseids peak tonight under a 0% moon. That won't happen again on this date until 2045. After midnight, look northeast. Peak rates just before dawn. No gear needed.

The Perseids peak the night of Aug 12–13 and with a new moon, skies will be as dark as it gets. Up to 100 meteors/hour if you're lucky. Look up after midnight. ☄️🌌 #Perseids #meteorshower

These whirlpools on the Sun's surface were captured by the Inouye Solar Telescope in Maui, Hawaii. The mirror inside the telescope alone is 4 meters (~13 feet)!
NEW 🚨: The world's most powerful solar telescope just captured the highest resolution images of the Sun's surface ever taken

DON’T FORGET TO LOOK UP; on August 12, 2026, there will be a total solar eclipse, along with a peak of the Perseid meteor shower and also a rare alignment of six planets will all occur on the same day.
