The Moral Compass of Mining: Faith, Justice and Environmental Rights in Africa's Mining Sector At the 5th African Business and Human Rights Forum that ran from 29th September to 1st October 2026, Faith Actors, Civil Society Representatives, Government, Business and community representatives came together to discuss how Africa's mineral wealth can contribute to sustainable development while respecting human rights and protecting the environment. The Norwegian Church Aid Advocacy Programme Africa (NAPA) and @FECCLAHA organized organized a side session that explored the realities faced by mining-affected communities across the continent. Through a powerful documentary and insightful panel discussions, participants reflected on the impacts of mining, including land dispossession, environmental degradation, loss of livelihoods, inadequate compensation and limited community participation in decision-making. Speakers emphasized that while mining can create economic opportunities, it must be accompanied by strong governance, transparency, accountability, environmental stewardship and respect for human dignity. Faith actors were recognized as key partners in amplifying community voices, advocating for justice, and accompanying affected communities in their pursuit of equitable development. A key message that emerged from the discussions was that communities must be at the center of mining governance. Participants called for greater access to information, stronger environmental and human rights protections, meaningful consultation throughout the mining lifecycle and accessible grievance and remedy mechanisms. The session also underscored the importance of collaboration among governments, businesses, faith institutions, civil society organizations and communities to promote responsible and people-centered mining practices across Africa. As Africa continues to harness its rich mineral resources, stakeholders reaffirmed that development should not come at the expense of people or the environment. Instead, the continent's mineral wealth should contribute to human dignity, environmental sustainability and inclusive prosperity for all. Only about 23% of the climate finance Africa needs each year to deliver its 2030 climate commitments is currently being met. Africa has contributed little to the climate crisis yet faces a major financing gap to respond to it. Norwegian Church Aid is attending the launch of the #AfricaCantWait campaign, happening now in Addis Ababa, reaffirming our commitment to locally led climate action and the leadership of faith actors as key links between communities and decision makers.
