🇰🇪Kenya’s general elections on August 10, 2027 are 285 days away, and they will be an acid test for media freedom and digital rights. Elections bring a high risk of #InternetShutdowns, and #Kenya is already showing warning signs: Telegram blocks during national exams and disruptions during the 2024 Gen Z protests. Courts have barred shutdowns for now, but the orders are temporary. Whether Kenyans stay online in August 2027 depends on the final ruling and on regulators and telcos. Our key recommendations: 1. The Communications Authority and telecom operators should publicly commit not to shut down or throttle the internet. 2. Courts should keep interim protections against internet disruptions in place. 3. The NCIC, IEBC, judiciary and MCK should agree on clear joint protocols for responding to digital threats.
