Orange County approves a nearly $800M tourist tax plan, paid for in part by vacation rental guests.
Why it matters: It’s concrete proof of what vacation rental stays pay for in Florida communities, which helps whenever local officials debate new rules or fees.
Every vacation rental booking in Orange County helps pay for things like a performing arts center and a university stadium.
County commissioners voted 6-1 to approve a tourist development tax spending plan of nearly $800 million for 13 projects. The biggest items include $350 million for the Dr. Phillips Center in downtown Orlando, $60 million for a culture and history museum in Eatonville, and $46 million for UCF athletic facilities. The money comes from the county’s 6% tax on hotel and vacation rental stays.
"Our industry should tell this story more often", said Denis Hanks, Executive Director of the Florida Alliance for Vacation Rentals. Collecting and paying TDT isn’t just paperwork.
