For years, depression has been diagnosed as a single disease based on symptoms – yet the underlying causes can vary from person to person. FNIH is launching the first phase of a long-term study that will collect data across a broad set of measures to identify biomarkers and more clearly define depression subtypes. This will pave the way for more individualized care for the nearly 21 million U.S. adults who experience a major depressive episode each year.  Learn more: fnih.org/press-release/fnihs… #PrecisionMedicine #MAP-D #BridgestoBreakthroughs #Depression #BiomarkerScience

EXCITING NEWS: FNIH has selected three additional human-based research platforms for development into pilot projects to help advance New Approach Methodologies. These concepts hold significant potential to support human health through improved drug and safety testing: 🧫 Developmental Toxicity: A lab-based model uses human stem cells to determine if compounds cause birth defects, supporting safer drug development. ❤️ Cardiac Safety: A human stem cell-based platform combines advanced imaging with AI to assess whether drug candidates can harm heart tissue, potentially identifying safety risks earlier. 🧬 Cancer Therapies: An advanced human tumor platform combines engineered tissue with AI to recreate how cancer interacts with the immune system, enabling earlier predictions of treatment response. There are now seven platforms under development — all based on a call for submissions from the scientific community — including four that were chosen earlier this year. Learn more about how human-based platforms are advancing through the efforts of the Validation and Qualification Network, a public-private partnership that's currently under development: fnih.org/news/three-more-nam… #NAMs #VQN #BridgestoBreakthroughs #FDA #EPA #NIH #ICCVAM #ORIVA #ComplementARIE

May is Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month, which makes it a great time to talk about the recent FDA action that could accelerate the development of much-needed new treatments. Osteoporosis is a chronic condition that develops when bone mass decreases with aging, a process that is accelerated by menopause in women. In the United States, more than 10 million older adults have osteoporosis, and another 43 million are at high risk. #BiomarkerScience #BiomarkersConsortium #osteoporosis
