The jury was moved by his uninterrupted, non-selective stance with the oppressed - Roma communities, LGBTI+ persons, refugees, the disadvantaged groups - and by how his struggle, though from a different country and tradition, meets Ebru Timtik's on the same ground. #ETAward2026

Recalling the state violence at Ebru Timtik's funeral in Istanbul (28 August 2020), "In the wake of loss" insists that public mourning is a fundamental human right - and inherently political. In solidarity with all living under occupation and oppression. #EbruTimtikAward

The notebook draws on philosopher Judith Butler's essay "Violence, Mourning, Politics" (Precarious Life). Çalhanoğlu copied sentences from it by hand - a notebook made entirely of Butler's words, a meditation on how mourning transforms us. #ArtforJustice

At its heart, a question from Butler - what makes a life grievable; whose lives are publicly recognised and mourned, and whose deaths stay invisible. The questions are left open, unmarked, as in the poem. Public mourning becomes an act of recognition. #EbruTimtikAward

The piece grew from thinking of the IFTD and the Ebru Timtik Award as a form of collective mourning - annual gatherings that refuse closure and carry Ebru Timtik's memory into the ongoing struggle for justice. #EbruTimtikAward

Dr Kadlót on pre-trial detention practices in Hungary: a system where judicial oversight barely exists outside Budapest and the rights of the defence are at times restricted. Lack of access to documents and clients in detention, with Prosecutor's motions often of coercive nature.

Dr Kádar stressed that 'fair trial rights are as much a question of culture and institutional values as they are of law', in the context of Hungarian law enforcement's lack of compliance with procedural obligations and respect for the rights of the defence.
