Imagine treating yourself with the same patience & understanding you might offer someone you genuinely care for. Root for yourself, even if its just for today. Even if its only the next moment. We have influence over our next thought, start there.

Trauma can teach us to deny our real emotions by misnaming them. For years, I thought I was "jealous" of other folks' loving parents. What I actually felt was grief, the pain of never having. But I shamed myself for needing the very things I was denied: care & protection.

A major recovery challenge is to forgive ourselves for what we didn't know back then. Or not doing what we couldn’t do. Memories will trigger a dump truck of shame & it'll all feel justified. Of course, it's BS, trauma's deception. Forgive your past self, that kid deserves it.

#WritersAnvil No one knows despair like an only child growing up with abusive and neglectful parents. Truly, no one hears you cry - you just don't matter. As we grow, we'll lean hard into just trying to matter. This can lead us down the darkest of paths. #cptsd #lifewriting

Recovery anger is an important tool. It shows us that we were worth protecting, it builds self-trust.

Stewart recalled: "I saw the self-loathing of my father, due to his inability to control his violent outbursts. I saw society, police, doctors and neighbours conspire to hide the abuse with comments like: β€˜She must have provoked him.'" theguardian.com/culture/2026…

People who've lost hope do not necessarily need to be told to find it. We may need someone to help create the conditions in which hope becomes possible again. But I will never downplay the importance of curiosity, self-trust, and even some spite-healing in the recovery process.β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Many trauma survivors have extraordinary "discipline"β€”we molded & twisted ourselves in many ways just to survive. We've learned to turn every single part of being human into a test of discipline. Healing is mostly replacing self-control with self-compassion & self-trust. β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Suicide research often focuses on the "imitation effect," where media reports on suicide increases suicide rates. There is also the Papageno Effect, showing media can play a protective role in preventing suicide w/ stories of overcoming suicidal crises. tinyurl.com/3a9c3fzc

In 2022, the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the Papageno Effect "showed evidence that exposure to narratives of hope and recovery resulted in a small, but statistically significant reduction in mean suicidal ideation when compared with active controls."

Excellent read, IMO. Covers much ground, from silence, to AI’s sycophancy, to the weight of actual human presence. FWIW, I see my recovery as gaining skills to be fully human with other humans. AI could play a role (?), but those roles could be humans too. tinyurl.com/3yr4a2k5

The social taboo around suicide doesn't just silence conversations. It teaches us to silence ourselves, to look away from our own painful thoughts rather than investigate them with compassion & curiosity. Self-silencing shame has no role in self-compassionate inquiry or recovery.

Work (in education) brought me to Japan for the summer. The mountains were great, the digital detox was nice too. I'm still a work in progress, but I'm proud of my growth in the past few years. Healing is possible.
