I was recently able to watch three North Texas games to get an idea of the type of offense new Head Coach Eric Morris will be bringing to Stillwater. UNT faced Navy, Rice and UTSA in these games.
(Thread continues below)
I think this is the first time (I didn't chart Murray State) that we've seen QB Power from the Pokes this year.
Looks to be an RPO WR Screen tag off WR T Lewis' Orbit Motion. They also have the RB Hawkins lead blocking through the hole behind the pulling guards kick out block.
I charted formations more closely this game, so I can’t compare counts to earlier games. I had 14 snaps in 4 or 5 wide at the snap (10 four wide, 4 five wide).
It felt like the most 4 and 5 wide of any game this year, not counting Murray State, with more stacked WR sets too.
Run game by the numbers: 31 carries, 115 yards, 3.7 per carry. WVU was 5.4.
PFF has 14 zone and 15 gap runs, so it’s even closer to a split than my chart. The right side was the best direction at 4.7 per carry. The left was 4.0 and the middle 3.0.
I charted all 61 offensive snaps from Oklahoma State’s 42-28 win over UCF and compared them to Tulsa, Oregon, WVU and the North Texas tape I charted in January.
As a reminder, I did not chart the Murray State game.
4th down: 1 of 2. OSU went for it on 4th and 5 at the UCF39 in the 1st quarter from 4 wide with motion, slant to Young for 13. The other was 4th and 3 at the UCF21 with 21 seconds left, PA fade to Lewis, incomplete.
Tulsa was 2 of 6, Oregon 1 of 1 and WVU 0.
4 of those 5 were set up by a sack, a false start, a 3 yard loss and a 1 yard run.
On 1st down OSU ran it 66% of the time (19 of 29) for 4.8 per carry. On 2nd down it threw it 65% of the time (13 of 20).
All five 3rd and 5+ snaps came out of 4 or 5 wide, and none had pre snap motion.
3rd and 14: checkdown to the RB
3rd and 9: incomplete
3rd and 10: incomplete
3rd and 11: incomplete
3rd and 5: outside zone for 2
Third down: 4 of 9 (44%). Tulsa was 5 of 16 and WVU was 2 of 10.
3rd and 1 or 2: 4 of 4, all runs
3rd and 5+: 0 of 5
Screens: PFF has 2 attempts, 2 catches, 12 yards, both to Coleman. One was a standalone WR screen from 5 wide, the other a WR screen RPO tag off a GT Counter.
I had that tag on 4 plays. At UNT I noted Morris prefers screen tags attached to runs, and that is still true.
Mestemaker was pressured on 13 of 29 dropbacks (45%) and UCF blitzed 31%.
Kept clean: 13 of 16, 12.6 YPA
Under pressure: 6 of 12, 8.9 YPA
He was at 4.0 YPA under pressure at Tulsa. Final line was 19 of 28 for 308, 2 TD and 0 INT.
Deep throws were 4 of 8 for 109 yards and a TD. 3 of 4 to the left, 1 of 1 down the middle and 0 of 3 to the right.
Passing depth on 28 attempts (PFF)
Behind LOS: 3 (11%)
Short, 0 to 9: 9 (32%)
Medium, 10 to 19: 8 (29%)
Deep, 20+: 8 (29%)
57% of attempts went 10+ yards. That was 42% at WVU and 26% at Tulsa.
Play action or RPO pass: 11 of 29 dropbacks (38%), which matches PFF. At Tulsa it was 20% and at UNT I had it at 37%.
With PA: 8 of 11, 164 yards, 14.9 YPA, TD
Without PA: 11 of 17, 144 yards, 8.5 YPA, TD
RPO tags: 14 of 61 snaps (23%). WVU was 25 of 68 (37%), so there was less RPO overall, which matched what I saw on tape.
The 2nd half started with more though. 3 of the first 15 snaps of the game had a tag. The first 19 snaps of the 2nd half had 7 (37%).
I noted the opening script (or what I'm calling the script) was run with tempo and not much motion. 3 of the first 15 snaps had motion (20%) and the script went 8 runs and 7 passes.
Tempo showed up again on the first drive of the 2nd half, on a Wide Zone with an RPO tag.
WR motion was the most common again: 9 WR, 5 TE and 3 RB. At WVU TE and WR were even.
Morris still moves the TE, but more of the motion is coming from receivers now, including several across the formation and an orbit.
Pre snap motion or shift
Tulsa: 29%
Oregon: 45%
WVU: 34%
UCF: 28% (17 of 61)
At UNT I charted Morris at about 30%, so this is right in that range again.
Designed QB runs: 2. The Bash keeper for a touchdown and a QB Draw with an RPO tag on the two point try.
I had zero against Tulsa and WVU, and Oregon was the Zone Read and QB Draw game.
A lot of the gap number was GT and GH Counter. I had Counter on 7 plays vs UCF, 6 runs and 1 RPO pass.
WVU: 3
Tulsa: 1
Oregon: 0
Counter has shown up on some RPO looks before, but this was the most they have used it. Duo was 5 of the 31 designed runs.
