Imagine the horror
I’ve trained myself to turn my eyes away. Not because I don’t care. Because my heart can’t bear any more. Because I see too much already.
In the hospital, I see mothers carrying their children in pieces. Fathers who’ve stopped speaking. Babies who’ve never opened their eyes.
I sew skin, I stop bleeding, I sign death certificates with fingers that tremble behind gloves.
But outside of work, when my shift ends, I no longer watch the videos.
Not of the explosions. Not of the children dug out of the rubble like broken dolls. Not of the women who scream until their throats give out and no sound comes.
But today, something made me stay.
A video. A woman, covered in dust, was holding her son, what was left of him.
Still, she held him as if he were whole.
She leaned close, pressed her lips to his ear, and whispered: “I made you bread.” Her voice trembled like a candle about to die.
Her hands shook as she stroked what was left of his hair. She didn’t look at the wound in his skull. She looked at him like he was just sleeping in too long.
Then she lay down beside him, pulled his body into her chest, and closed her eyes.
As if she could dream him back.
And I understood something terrible: She believed the bread could bring him back.
Do you understand?
This was not poetry. This was not metaphor. This was a mother who believed that if she could have only brought him bread, if she had held it in her hands, warm and real, her child wouldn’t be dead.
Because he died hungry.
Not just poor.
Starving.
His ribs sharp under his skin. His lips split from thirst.
The kind of hunger that gnaws at you slowly until even death seems like relief.
He died without a piece of bread that costs less than a dollar in a world filled with excess.
And she, She thought a loaf could have saved him.
That bread was stronger than war.
That love and sesame seeds might be enough.
I turned off the screen.
And I sat in the dark for a long time.
I did not cry for the child.
I cry for children every day.
I cried for her.
For her belief.
For the broken world that made her think bread was all it would take.
And maybe, in another world, it would have been.

Rest in peace @ori_goldberg, a couragous man. We send our condolences to his family.
It’s not often I get choked up about the death of a person I only knew online. But Ori truly was a remarkable man. He spoke out fiercely against what Israel was doing. He even told me in my last exchange with him, that he no longer believed in a two state solution. He wanted a fully free Palestine.
May he rest in eternal peace. ❤️

Ori passed away from cancer today. I’m heartbroken by his loss @ori_goldberg Please keep him in your prayers and pray for his soul to rest in peace 💔

I’m really sad to hear about Ori’s passing. One of the few sober, humane commentators from within Israel the last few years. We’ve lost so many good people.

One cannot overstate this. Israelis knew and know everything happening in Gaza and in the West Bank. Attempts to seperate "liberals" from "messianics" are based on a lie. Israel is not a "robust democracy" even for Jews. It is a genocidal rough beast, endangering the world.

Devastated to hear of @ori_goldberg's passing due to cancer.
Ori showed me such immense hospitality when I was doing research for my dissertation in Israel, more than 20 years ago. He was not only a true intellectual, but he also had the moral compass, courage, and integrity of an angel.
He showed that courage and moral clarity in recent years, as few in Israel dared to stand alongside him in opposing the genocide and wars. Ori was not afraid to stand alone.
Sadly, it will take years, perhaps decades, before Israel fully grasps what it has lost with Ori's passing.
And that it perhaps never truly deserved Ori.

Oh man, this is so sad. Ori was a friend, a brave, beautiful and wise human being, and a moral, compassionate, powerful voice for humanity.
He will be painfully missed, and I will miss a friend

Oh no. What a horrible loss. A wonderful human being.
Ave atque vale, my friend.

Simply heartbreaking.
Ori always spoke the truth, without filters or fear. He was incredibly sharp, intelligent, and never afraid to say what others wouldn’t.
He will be deeply missed.
What an extraordinary human being.

So sad to hear about the passing today of Israeli writer and academic Ori Goldberg. I used to read his posts, wishing there was an American “Ori Goldberg” writing in the same way about American social pathologies.

Beyond devastated to hear that @ori_goldberg has died.
I interviewed him throughout the genocide.
He was the best of us.
A man of moral courage, moral clarity, consistent humanity, and always incisive analysis.
An exemplar of the great tradition of Jewish humanity.

I stand with the massacred ones. I know them for their blood. Too cheap to collect, laying in the street. I know them. All they have to give is their life's blood.
I stand with the truthful ones. I know them for the simplicity of their message. No backtracking and last minute "messaging". Truth.
I stand with the patient ones. I know them for their constant return to Their place. They stand in their place. They must have a place; otherwise, where would they stand?
My privilege has been based on countermandimg theirs. I have not been massaccred. Should I die, I will have been "murdered". That evil robs their death of meaning. I will not even be a soldier. I will be a martyr.
If I die, I will be as far from simple truth as possible. I will be explained, I will be analyzed, my life's blood will be bagged and presented as proof positive that some plan or other, always bigger than myself.
Lastly, if I die I stand a chance of never having a place of my own. I will always be representing an ulterior force, washed away by any wind that comes, intentional or unintentional. Revealing the transience of power, I will never have patience and lose my place or even the semblance of a place.
I will be a jealous spirit, haunting the earth. I will lose my place beside God, who is famously with the patient ones. I do not want to lose that place. I wish that God, in his infinite wisdom, would me a small place in the beating heart of the universe
