Sounds good — until you read the fine print.
It’s not exclusive to descendants. It’s open enrollment.
That’s not repair. That’s diversion.

Our Key Concerns. The Bureau is:
• Reparations Diversion: It expands eligibility beyond descendants of people enslaved in the U.S.
• Bureaucracy Without Repair: It provides no payments, restitution, or wealth restoration.
• Delay by Design: It's tied to years of study before any real repair.
• Erosion of Trust: They tried (and failed) to place the bureau under law enforcement oversight.
• Departure from Task Force: It breaks from California’s own Reparations plan.

We had a tough hearing this week at the #California Capitol in Sacramento as we opposed SB 437 -- the #Reparations/genealogy study bill -- and SB 518 -- the bill that creates a new state bureau called the Bureau for Desdendants of American Slavery inside California’s top Law Enforcement Agency (CA Department of Justice) and then opens the Bureau up to other "communities" (aka people who are not descendants).
I gotta show love to the people across the state and country who are standing up and out against this. And shame on the people and organizations supporting it, not to mention the author of these bad bills @drakilahweber @CABlackCaucus
We don't need another Reparations study. And NO Reparations system should run through law enforcement. Ever. Period.

Months ago, we told you there was a secret @CABlackCaucus plan underway to take the millions of dollars in Reparations money in the California state budget and, instead of putting it toward Reparations, give to non-profits.
Well, we just saw the state budget and, guess what, we were right, and that is exactly what they're trying to do.

California's Reparations Task Force, which already spent 2 years researching and studying issues including genealogy and Reparations, made it clear: We don't need to STUDY how to do genealogy for Reparations; we need to hire genealogists to DO genealogy!
It gets worse. If SB437 becomes law, it could mean no other state bill, program, or resource for descendants of persons emancipated from U.S Chattel Slavery can happen until this study (that we don't need) is complete. So SB 437 could STALL Reparations and other much-needed resources for YEARS!

“In the final days of the last legislative session, bowing to pressure from Newsom’s office, which wanted to see additional genealogy studies to determine eligibility included in the bill, the caucus pulled the package entirely. Dozens of advocates rushed to the state Capitol to protest in a heated standoff against legislators.
Last month, the caucus reintroduced a version of this bill that, to the frustration of advocates, includes additional research requirements to determine eligibility for recipients.
Even Kamilah Moore, the former taskforce chair, has been critical of this strategy. “They created a different agency that’s dependent on an additional study on genealogy,” she said. “I think it was a mistake.”
The taskforce made more than 100 recommendations in its 1,000-page report, Moore said, and the caucus should use those as its North Star. Yet she says they have “deviated” from the course.”

we don't need no more studies! We just did that...it was called the California #Reparations Task Force.
that's one reason why the sb518 Descendants Bureau bill and it's companion Study bill sb437 need to be withdrawn, voted down, or vetoed. @cjecofficial
