Zimbabwe is set to advance its first utility-scale wind farm and landmark co-located hybrid facility: the US$300 million Guruve-Mazowe Renewable Energy Project, co-developed by Tatanga Energy (led by co-founder and Director Ms. Memory Mashingaidze) and Modaso Energy (led by co-founder and CEO Ramy Lotfy), with balance sheet backing from parent company MISA Group (steered by CEO Mr Guy Hacking). The technical configuration pairs 128 MW of wind (16 ร 8 MW turbines) and 100 MWac solar PV with a 50 MW / 100 MWh LFP battery storage system behind a single 100 MW grid connection. This setup optimises diurnal generation to achieve a grid capacity factor exceeding 60%, delivering roughly 550 GWh/year of firm, non-hydro-dependent clean energy.
Commercially, the asset utilises an innovative dual-offtake framework designed to diversify revenue and strengthen project bankability. Offtake is split between a long-term utility PPA with ZESA Holdings (headed by Group CEO Eng. Cletus Nyachowe) and private contracting via ZimGreenCo (led by Zimbabwe MD Mr Lion Mashiri) to access regional cross-border trading across the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). With debt term sheets agreed alongside lead debt arranger Standard Bank (led by Head of Project Finance Ms Sherrill Byrne), the project targets financial close in mid-2027 and commercial operations in 2029.

Senior financiers and energy executives gathered for a session titled โMobilising Capital for Cross-Border Energy Projects From Vision to Bankable Dealsโ at the Energy Forum For Africa - EFFA (EFFA) Conference at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka. Mr Simbarashe Murondoti moderated, and the conversation centered on how developers, commercial lenders, and DFIs can unlock private capital and overcome the practical hurdles to bankability.
A few things stood out. Local developers face an early roadblock during project preparation, where feasibility studies and impact assessments cost between $100,000 and over $1 million, locking out domestic players before transactions ever reach credit committees. The panel noted that bankability relies on strong power purchase agreements under open access rules, capable EPC contractors with proven delivery records to manage cost overruns, and blended finance structures where DFIs provide the tenure extension and de-risking needed for commercial banks to step in. While solar generation has expanded rapidly, speakers stressed that grid stability demands baseload power, distribution reinforcement, and transmission interconnectors to evacuate power regionally.
Speakers also underlined the difficulty of managing cross-border transactions that navigate multiple utilities, varied tax codes, and different currencies. For lenders to commit over 10 to 20 year horizons, policy reforms must remain durable across changing political administrations, and stakeholders must sit down early to transparently price and allocate risk.
On the panel were Mr Simbarashe Absolom Murondoti, Senior Partner, Absolom & Shepherd as Moderator; Mr Mwindwa Siakalima, Chief Executive, @StanbicBankZM; Mr Austin Chijikwa, CFA, Head of Business Banking, Zambia National Commercial Bank (@zanacoplc); Mr Luyanga Mufungulwa, CFA, Head of Corporate & Investment Banking, @FNBZambia; and Mr Kangwa Lufungulo from Nathel Energy Limited.
If Southern Africa is to meet its rising industrial demand, financial institutions, developers, and governments must align to lower funding costs, syndicate larger club deals, and translate regional vision into operational generation assets.

Livingstone, 3 November 2026: Modaso Energy, a MISA Group company, and Zimbabwean developer Tatanga Energy announce their partnership to develop the Guruve-Mazowe (Chikonyora) Hybrid Renewable Energy Project in Mashonaland Central. Once built, it will be Zimbabwe's first utility-scale wind farm and the first project to combine wind, solar and battery storage on one site at a utility scale in sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) with the national utility as a key offtaker.
The project brings together 128 MW of wind, 100 MWac of solar PV and a 50 MW/100 MWh battery behind a single 100 MW connection to the national grid. It is expected to deliver around 550 GWh a year, equal to roughly 5% of Zimbabwe's current annual generation.
Tatanga Energy originated the project and is the partner on the ground. It leads land, community, permitting and government engagement in Zimbabwe, and has done so since the wind measurement campaign began in 2021.
Modaso Energy leads technical development and structuring. It redesigned the original wind-only scheme as a wind, solar and storage hybrid, and is structuring the projectโs offtake, contracting and debt financing towards financial close.
MISA Group, Modasoโs parent company, brings balance sheet strength and its network of financial relationships. It anchors the sponsor group, connects the project to international lenders, investors and risk-cover providers, and holds the partnership together on a single route to financial close. MISA Group is based in Geneva and has operated in Africa for more than 27 years, with activity in more than 25 countries and annual revenue above USD 5-billion.
โThere is no shortage of renewable resources in Africa; but there is a shortage of electrons at the right place and the right time, and of bankable, high-quality projects. At MISA Group through Modaso Energy, we're changing that,โ says Guy Hacking, CEO of MISA Group. โEverything we build is done in partnership, whether within MISA Group or with third parties. The GuruveMazowe Hybrid Renewable Energy Project demonstrates this: Tatanga Energy has developed a well-designed, high-quality project, but there was a huge opportunity for us to partner with them and add the technical, hybrid expertise of Modaso Energy while also putting MISA Groupโs balance sheet and banking connections to work. With Modaso, we have a pipeline of over 1 GWh of renewable projects that sit behind this initial project, powered by our firm belief that Africa is not under-resourced, it's under-invested โ and we exist to change that.โ
๐๐๐๐ญ๐๐ค๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ง๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐
ZESA, the national utility, is set to be the project's primary offtaker; negotiations on the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and Use of System Agreement are in progress. โAt ZESA, our job is to deliver reliable power to every Zimbabwean home, farm and business. Through ZESA, we are working with Modaso and Tatanga to bring the Guruve-Mazowe projectโs power onto our national grid. This will be Zimbabweโs first utility-scale wind farm, and our countryโs first project to combine wind, solar and battery storage. It means new clean power for Zimbabwe, and new skills for Zimbabweans. We are proud to help build it,โ says Eng. Cletus Nyachowe, Group Chief Executive Officer, ZESA.
Africa GreenCo, through its Zimbabwean subsidiary ZimGreenCo, has also signed Heads of Terms to buy a share of the plant's output under a long-term contract. Additional output may be sold into the Southern African Power Pool.
โZimbabwe needs new renewable generation that is reliable and bankable,โ says Lion Mashiri, Managing Director for Zimbabwe at Africa GreenCo. โAs a contracted buyer and trader, ZimGreenCo gives Guruve-Mazowe a second route to market alongside ZESA, with access to buyers across the Southern African Power Pool. That diversified revenue makes the project stronger for lenders and helps bring private investment into Zimbabweโs power sector. A hybrid plant that delivers firm power from wind, solar and storage fits what the market needs. We are proud to support Tatanga Energy, Modaso Energy and MISA Group as they take the project to financial close.โ
Standard Bank has been appointed lead arrangers for the project debt, and the debt term sheet has been agreed. The project represents an estimated USD 300-million of foreign direct investment into Zimbabwe.

How Do We Unlock Africaโs Energy Potential? Keynote by Monie Captan
Cross-border electricity trading hinges on direct market access, open transmission capacity, harmonised regulation and commercial bankability across regional power pools.
In his keynote speech delivered at the Energy Forum for Africa, Monie Captan, Deputy CEO of Petrodex, outlines the primary commercial barriers facing private power traders. Mandatory reliance on national utilities restricts qualified private participants from contracting directly with generators, traders, and large industrial off-takers. For entities operating across the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and West African Power Pool (WAPP), effective regional trading requires non-discriminatory transmission access, harmonized wheeling methodologies, and clear visibility into the full delivered cost of electricityโincluding line losses, balancing fees, and ancillary service charges.
The keynote focuses on resolving the central project finance challenge: converting generation capacity into predictable, collectible, and repatriable cross-border cash flows. Captan explains how tailored payment security structures, foreign exchange convertibility mechanisms, and aligned contractual frameworks protect capital against multi-currency mismatches and credit risks. Drawing on Petrodexโs commercial operations, he highlights how demand aggregation across more than 25 mining operations in Zambia and the DRC is already driving private generation investment alongside dedicated transmission buildouts.
