I wrote a little about THE DARK WIZARD, the HBO docuseries about climber dean potter and how it's entrancing, infuriating, and compelling ambiguous about its subject. 100 FOOT WAVE fans, this one should be on your watchlist. @vulture: vulture.com/article/the-dark…

Was Dean Potter such a strong climber because he treated his life as competition, or was his inability to expand his relationships past rivalries his downfall? The Dark Wizard doesn’t settle on an answer, but the way it asks the question is riveting. vulture.com/article/the-dark…

The Dark Wizard’s Unconquerable Contradiction

The HBO docuseries can’t settle on an answer for why Dean Potter was the way he was, but it’s riveting to watch it try.

I swear, if Dark Wizard isn't the best documentary of 2026, I don't know what is. My highest recommendation. HBO Max.

I've just finished watching the first part of the new documentary on Dean Potter, 'The Dark Wizard,' and I'm overwhelmed. It's easy to dismiss him as someone with a death wish, but that oversimplifies everything. He was, ultimately, in love with life, driven by a consuming need to be in the presence of life's true inscape. It's what all the great climbers have been under the spell of - from Dean Potter to Ueli Steck to Jerzy Kukuczka.
