Following Sir Winston Churchillโs death, his widow Clementine received many letters.
One particularly poignant,
โThat he died is unimportant, for we must all pass away. That he lived is momentous to the destiny of all. He is not gone. He lives wherever men areย free.โ

Following on from this morningโs picture of the MERT aircraft. I found a poem on the notes on my phone which I had written ages ago. Signed off as GS (if you know you know!)
I havenโt really edited it or played around with it, but I think itโs apt to share this evening as we think of MERT. More to come tomorrow and all week. I make no apologies for flooding my feed with Remembrance this week. #lestweforget

Remembering the late WWII veteran Alec Penstone and his powerful words:
โI can see in my mindโs eye those rows and rows of white stones and all the hundreds of my friends who gave their livesโฆ for what? The country of today? No, Iโm sorry, but the sacrifice wasnโt worth the result of what it is now. What we fought for was our freedomโฆ now itโs a darn sight worse than when I fought for it.โ
Lest we forget.

In May 1969, American troops fought one of the Vietnam Warโs most brutal battles on Ap Bia Mountain, better known as Hamburger Hill. For ten days, soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division battled their way through dense jungle and steep terrain against heavily entrenched North Vietnamese forces, suffering devastating casualties along the way.
Amid the fighting, a reporter asked a young American soldier what message he would give to people living fifty years in the future. His reported response was simple but powerful: โDonโt send your sons to finish what politicians start.โ
American forces captured Hamburger Hill on May 20, only to abandon the position less than two weeks later. The decision sparked outrage back home, turning the battle into a symbol of the enormous human cost of the Vietnam War.
More than five decades later, the soldierโs message remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those sent into battle and the lasting consequences of decisions made far from the front lines.

Between 8-11 November, thanks to some truly incredible support, we are creating a tribute to The Unknown Warrior in a poignant act of Remembrance for the fallen.
On Sunday 8th, we will begin a special journey from the town of St Pol-sur-Ternoise in France. The journey will retrace the same route, timings and modes of transport that were used bring The Unknown Warrior home in 1920.
Using a special wreath to represent him, our route will be fantastically supported by the Royal Navyโs HMS Ranger and HMS Puncher, South Eastern Railway and The Royal Logistic Corps Horse Drawn Heritage Team.
On 11th November, Armistice Day, the wreath will travel on a horse drawn WW1 GS Wagon via Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill, past Buckingham Palace, The Mall and then after a rest at Horse Guards, will continue on Whitehall, past The Cenotaph and complete its incredible journey at Westminster Abbey where it will be laid next to the famous Tomb.
There will be many highlights and highly poignant moments along the way and we have plans to capture it all in images and video.
We also hope there will be a great deal of media coverage in order to share this amazing story and help us to pay our respects not only to the fallen but to the millions who have lost a loved one in service.
