People are cancelling subscriptions, buying cheaper food, avoiding nights out and putting off holidays because everything costs too much.
They're switching supermarkets, comparing energy tariffs and cutting back on little things that used to make life enjoyable.
And yet, millions of people are still struggling to make their wages last until payday.
You can only cut back so much when rent, bills, transport and food take up most of your income.
At some point, the problem isn't how people spend their money.
It's how much of their money it costs just to live.

The government is committed to tackling homelessness and ending the need for emergency food.
Neither is plausible while LHA stays frozen.
The freeze is driving people out of their homes & to the doors of foodbanks.
I know the Chancellor and PM understand. They need to act.
Exclusive: Over a dozen charities have written to Chancellor John Healey demanding an end to the housing benefit freeze at next week's Budget.
They say: "Unfreezing LHA would also give millions of low-income private renters some much needed breathing space."
Some of the charities that signed the letter are set to attend a pre-Budget homelessness summit in No10 in coming days.
Andy Burnham called for an end to the freeze while mayor of Greater Manchester.

Will you, @andyburnham, use your first Budget to deliver #FreeSchoolMealsForAll to ease pressure on working families? It’s already happening in Wales and London, and 8 in 10 parents back it. Thousands of families explain why: deliverthedinners.org.uk/?so…

We can afford social security.
What we can’t afford is to live in a society where people are going without the essentials.

Good. Voluntary, high quality, with wraparound support & getting it quickly to those kost likely to need it. This is what all the evidence says will work.
EXCLUSIVE - tomorrow, in his Labour Party Conference speech, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden will announce that disabled young people (NEETS) will get a “fast track” for his Jobs Guarantee scheme
This will be voluntary and come with wraparound support
NEETs with disabilities involving mental health, physical conditions and learning disabilities will be eligible
Following McFadden’s visit to The Netherlands to view the Dutch youth employment system, this suggests a direction of travel for the government

❗ Cuts to Universal Credit won't help people into work. It'll just drive up food bank need.
Universal Credit already doesn't cover essential living costs, like food and bills. And it's one of the main reasons why people need to turn to food banks.

Which would you choose?
🏚️Pay the rent.
🍊Put food on the table.
♨️Heat your home.
The bleak choice facing many private renters.
Because housing support has fallen far below rents & is frozen. We need the Prime Minister to act this Autumn. ⬇️

One of my constituents, Will, has produced a really powerful documentary about food poverty in the UK.
"Crunch Point" is an 11-minute hand-drawn animation exploring the stories of people supported by food banks.

Inflation hits 3.1%. Energy price cap about to go up to £1723. And some scary predictions of where energy costs might go next year (see next tweet). Foodbanks already see too many people pushed to the brink. We’ll need targeted support to protect people already facing hunger.

People on the lowest incomes already know where every penny goes.
The problem is there’s not enough money to cover life’s essentials in the first place.
We've raised £334.01 so far this year, thanks to our supporters using @easyuk when they make online purchases! It's never too late to sign up and help us if you haven't already. Sign up this week and we could win a £250 donation: join.easyfundraising.org.uk/…

❗ Young people can't afford to live.
Our research found that a third of 16-25-year-olds cut back on food in the last 3 months.
Young people should be thinking about next steps in their lives, like moving out or learning to drive, but they can barely even afford to get by.
Hello @goustocooking .. we’re looking to put recipe cards in our food parcels and would really like to include single serve spice mixes… can you help!? 😃

🚨 BREAKING: millions of young people are being forced to put life on hold.
Financial hardship means that they’re having to delay major life milestones like moving out or learning to drive.
Some are even cutting back on food and turning to food banks.
