Despite the fact that my Twitter feed often consists of taking shots at the appalling state of the world, I am not a morose or despairing person.
I’m a joyous cynic and a gladsome naysayer.

Well, I did say it with a small grin creeping around the edges of my mouth. I do that “I’m kinda pulling your leg but I’m also serious” thing pretty well with the young’uns. 😂

Only the nouveau riche goes gaga for designer dogs, y’all. 😂
Old money (or those who at one time were and retain those sensibilities despite tighter funds) doesn’t. Weird kind of thing to be a subtle class marker, but it is. Not me of course - I’m mostly just plain old redneck and half my dogs have been neurotic in one way or another. But I observe and know my people.
In the south, one odd cultural marker of being low key quasi-aristocracy is that they always know where to get an excellent and well-bred dog. This is not the sort of person who chases down show breeders, or flashes cash for bloodlines they can then preen about. No, they simply know someone no one has ever heard of who has been quietly breeding the most stable and solid and sweetest labradors you’ve ever seen for like 5 human generations, on some horsey estate somewhere that’s mildly down-at-the-heels.

Took a very young relative to do an employment drug test today. He was antsy as heck, bcz “I drank like a gallon of water just in case I couldn’t go.” He’s back out 5 minutes later, and mad. “It was a spit test. They never told me that. I tortured my bladder for nothing!”
Me: This is a metaphor for what your entire working life will be, so get used to it and suck it up.
Him: Nana, you are not helping.
Me: Yes I am, you just can’t yet perceive it. 😆
The husband is a bit of an old Trekkie, so while he was sincerely sad to hear about Sir Patrick, he could not resist a bit of a gloat that “that glorious bastard Kirk is outliving them ALL.”
I feel kind of bad that the prospect of having a lion might be a better motivator to sainthood than the prospect of holiness, tho.
Lord have mercy on me. 😆
My granddaughter texted me yesterday that she and her beau really want to come and have a delicious Nana meal again soon, so making plans on that. I’m not quite sure if she always brings her boyfriends around (there haven’t been many) as a test for them, or as another means of impressing them with a fam that makes a mean potroast. But it does warm my heart that family and dating are not at all 2 separate spheres for her - it’s all an integrated whole, and she does that synthesis as natural as breathing. She’s gonna be alright, that child. 😄

All the men putting the *worst* possible spin on that post - that any woman saying this is absolutely telling you that you’re unattractive to her? You’re wrong.
All the women getting their backs up at the idea that a man might not find that phrasing complimentary, and insisting that they *must* do so? You’re wrong as well.
Stop it, children.
I would say to women: I know you meant it as a compliment, but men generally won’t receive it that way. So stop doing it.
I would say to men: I know you think that was a diss, but that often isn’t what she was trying to communicate at all, so no need to crash out over it.
Stuff between sexes can be difficult enough. Why do we INSIST on making it even harder than it needs to be?
Some version of this reddit post comes up once a week now and everyone argues over whether the guys are reasonable or unreasonable for taking it badly
This is totally autistic. If a group appears to dislike a compliment, those wishing to compliment them should just stop using the compliment
If I walk up to a group of black women and say "you are all a hot little bunch of n*ggers, aren't you??"
And they all gasp and tell me I've insulted them
I am not going to argue about how actually it was a deeply powerful compliment that they should be grateful to receive and tell them that they lack the perspective to see how thoughtful it was, etc. Everyone understands why that would be autistic
I can tell you with certainty, after decades of marriage, that if either a man or a woman is unwilling to adjust at all for “what he/she hears” - and instead always stands and stubbornly argues for “what I meant” … YNGMI.

Also, ladies - if what you mean is “you’re the marrying type, not the hookup type” as a genuine compliment, try rephrasing it this way:
“You’re amazingly attractive, but I don’t think I could sleep with you without falling in love and wanting you to stay.”
Just had some work done on my HVAC for a very good price. I have a guy. Philip. He does not have a website. He does not have employees. He used to work for a large HVAC installation/repair chain. He now makes a decent living on his own, and is frankly uninterested in expanding - he has plenty of work to pay his bills. “I am word-of-mouth only, and I only work for people I want to work for.”
He is meticulous. He is honest. He is not *cheap* but his prices are more than fair. I got his name and number from a nephew, who got it from a dude he fishes with. The unspoken rule is that you don’t hand out his number to terrible people, bcz he might stop servicing your unit as well if you were foolish enough to point some jerk his way. It’s all a bit strange and perhaps foreign to many these days, but it works. Added bonus: I do not get 3 texts and an email every damn time he fixes something, bugging me to “rate his service.” 😂
Being “settled for” is only a negative thing if the person doing the settling has made no real peace with that. Otherwise, it’s what was formerly known as growing the hell up and realizing that you’ve been gifted some very good things in life, and constantly hankering after “more and better” is a miserable way to live, and cultivating what one HAS is actually pretty darn rewarding.
Also, take care that one’s sneering at “settling” - which can indeed sometimes be a bad thing - does not take on the twisted nature of declaring the cultivation of contentment to be a vice, or at the very least a mere facade over resentment.
It isn’t. Gratitude and contentment can be REAL things, not merely “cope.”
