When data center developers and hyperscalers say they need more data centers, it isn't true. With existing data center capacity, leading labs regularly come out with models that require large training runs and they are even increasing usage limits. All with existing data centers.
Day 25/
We are doubling all usage limits for all Pro 100/200/500 tiers and Business Premium, effective today.
We heard your kind feedback and won’t be reducing usage limits for Pro 200, so your Work and Codex usage will stay the same. We’re also going to continue offering extended limits for dots for now, and usage of your dot will still continue to be separate from your default usage.
And we'll of course also keep shipping better models and other efficiency improvements that increase your effective usage over time.
Meanwhile, more evidence emerges every day that the astronomical number of proposed new data centers lock in catastrophic climate emissions, pollute communities across the country, stress water resources, and expand harmful gas extraction. We need a moratorium.

DeepRock is appealing to reopen the Ohio injection wells ODNR suspended after a 2021 wastewater blowout in Noble County.
The public’s seat on the Oil and Gas Commission hearing that appeal is vacant.

In Upper Burrell, TECfusions is converting the Alcoa Technical Center into a hyperscale data center that could use up to 3 GW of power. Anyone can comment on its air quality permit. Email [email protected] at the PA DEP by November 2 and cite permit 65-01147.
Funding provided by The Pittsburgh Foundation (@PittsburghFdn).
In Shippingport in Beaver County, a 2 GW hyperscale data center is being developed on the site of the former Bruce Mansfield coal power plant.

Ohio’s oil and gas well database runs on Microsoft Access. It needs paid software, and it has outgrown Access’s 2 GB limit, so it’s split across two files.
Ohioans shouldn’t need a software license to find out whether the well next door was inspected.
Tonight at 6pm: Allegheny County's hearing on the Springdale data center. It's open to anyone. You don't have to live in Allegheny County, or even in Pennsylvania. Written comments are due Nov 30:

Wastewater from the Redbird #4 injection well flooded 28 conventional production wells in Ohio, some as far as five miles away.
It didn’t result in a violation. The operator made voluntary changes and resumed.

In @MariettaTimes: the Kris-Mar 1 well in Washington County started leaking brine in 2023, and ODNR's incident record lists the amount released as zero. Bev Reed of @BuckeyeEnviNtwk: "The well was flowing for days after the leak was found."

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has suspended 17 data center permits after our investigation found that the agency continued to issue permits for the facilities despite the governor's directive to pause.
Over the summer of 2026, we researched twelve data centers in Southwestern PA. If they're all built, they could add enough gas-fired power to equal about three-quarters of the electricity the entire state used in 2024.

ODNR’s oil and gas division can’t fine operators directly. It has to ask the attorney general to sue.
We’re not aware of a single case of ODNR doing that for injection-well violations.

Over the summer of 2026, our four interns researched 12 data center proposals across six Southwestern PA counties. If they're all built, they could add enough gas-fired power to equal about three-quarters of the electricity the entire state of Pennsylvania used in 2024.
Want to get involved? You can support Senate Bill 1359 and a statewide moratorium, or join a local group: CROW in Homer City, SAVE in Springdale, Protect PT in Upper Burrell, @bcmac_ in Beaver County and Protect Burgettstown.
Importantly these data centers are not inevitable. Read the full report: fractracker.org/2026/10/sout…
