Officially Conditional Accept (Data) at the American Economic Review!🎉
I'm very grateful to the editor and referees for making the paper better and to everyone who supported me throughout.
Domestic violence research is back in the AER, 16 years after Aizer (2010)!
Paper in a nutshell: When the husband profits from his wife’s labor, physically hurting her costs him. After a coffee mill opening, women in the mill catchment areas are less likely to self-report domestic violence relative to the year before. Within the year, hospitals in the mill catchment areas are less likely to have a domestic violence patient in the peak harvest months, when the mills operate and that cost is likely to be highest. The results align with Becker’s (1968) economic model of crime: There is a cost. There is a benefit. If the cost outweighs the benefit, violence falls.
Amazing reflection on AI usage for writing, especially when discussing how this can become an equalizer for non-native speakers. Read it! It is not long and is absolutely necessary for the debate.

A signature feature of academic AI writing is (currently) that it is has bad judgment on what is important and what is not important, even refine.ink.
This is one of the most damaging AI "tells", b/c it reflects bad judgment on the part of the author as well. 1/

This paper is part of a broader line of research I’m pursuing on how role models, guidance, and scalable educational interventions shape aspirations and transitions—especially for students facing unequal access to information and support.
