I really don't understand all the uproar about Mbappe and China. You people didn't know China before? Is this news to y'all?
John Cena had to do a video in Chinese to apologize for calling Taiwan a country
Ozil made a tweet about China's mistreatment of Uyghurs and he got dropped and kicked out by Arsenal. According to Ozil, that's what ended his Arsenal career
NBA had to apologize to China because one manager tweeted support for the Hong Kong democracy protests in 2019
Marvel had to change the origin of the bald headed lady that trained Dr Strange (Ancient One) in the movie from Tibetan in the comics to Celtic cos China doesn't recognize Tibet. Such a tiny detail in a fucking movie. Lots of many examples
That's why all this western activism and moral virtie signalling will always be fake to me. In every instance they have folded and suspended their "values" rather than lose Chinese money. That's the reason for all this groveling. Money. Whenever you see them pandering with their fake activism just know they've done the financial math and know they can afford it
Why would the Islamic Republic trial him in absentia when he has already voluntarily returned to the country? They don't even bother to go through a kangaroo court anymore?
Jafar Panahi has been sentenced to five years and one month in prison by a Tehran court:
• The new ruling, according to his lawyer, is separate from a previous one-year prison sentence
• The court also ordered the confiscation of Panahi’s assets and imposed two-year bans on social media use and travel

Happy birthday Tsai Ming-liang!
Filled with expertly timed sight gags, GOODBYE, DRAGON INN is Tsai Ming-liang's rueful backwards glance at the disappearance of the filmgoing culture of his youth—and one of the seminal films of the 21st century.
See it this Friday at 6PM.

Well I guess animations and documentaries are directed by themselves
Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s “You Can See Everything” has been ruled ineligible for top prize at the Directors Guild of America Awards.
The movie can only compete in the outstanding directorial achievement in documentary category.

Funny you should mention Scorsese because Scorsese also learned from Cassavetes. The entire American independent cinema is pretty much built on the foundation of Cassavetes
OK, I'll bite. If John Cassavetes is so insanely influential and brilliant, why have I not heard about him until recently?
I've been on a side-quest with classic and esoteric movies, mostly through the Criterion collection. I've watched dozens of Criterion closet picks from filmmakers and actors I admire.
They pick Cassavetes films ALL THE TIME. Probably more than any other director except Scorsese. I haven't seen a single Cassavetes film. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about a Cassavetes film outside of those videos.
I'm not a slouch on film, I've got a pretty wide spread on what I've seen & what I appreciate. How has Cassavetes slipped through that net so completely for so long?

International soccer star @KMbappe should not apologize for calling Mao Zedong a dictator. Mao was a dictator, and by orders of magnitude, he did more harm to the Chinese people than a comment from a soccer player ever could. Mao was the leader of the CCP for decades and his dictatorship and disastrous policies killed tens of millions of Chinese people in the Cultural Revolution, the Great Famine, and other atrocities. Involved in the Party from its first national meeting in 1921, Mao is the principal historical figure for a Party that continues his practices of oppression and ideological purges. For decades, the CCP has denied the Chinese people basic human rights including freedom of expression and freedom of religion. These are rights enjoyed by Mbappe and millions of people around the world and Mbappe should exercise this opportunity to tell the horrific truth about Mao’s dictatorship.
The real disgrace in this news story is the companies rushing to apologize so they can continue to do business in China. The CCP is the largest oppressor of the Chinese people and their human rights, and those businesses that work with the CCP help normalize its crushing brutality. reuters.com/business/media-t…
This is so funny because Mao himself unabashedly admitted his dictatorship and bragged he killed more intellectuals than the notorious Chinese tyrant Qin Shi Huang
🚨 JUST IN: Chinese beverage company DongPeng have ended their sponsorship with Kylian Mbappé after he referred to former Chinese Premier Mao Zedong as a “dictator”.
The company have said they have “zero tolerance” for statements that hurt their national sentiment. @marca
Imagine in the year 2026 someone has to make a public apology for calling Hitler a genocidal maniac and that’s how insane this is
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mao Zedong is under any single social metric a dictator. Not a single popular election, single government party and lifetime leadership. Not even taking into account the millions of deaths under his reign.
