Gallup found 71% of Americans oppose a data center in their area, more than the 53% who oppose a nuclear plant. This weekend OpenAI said it wants to call them "AI compute campuses." A new name doesn't answer anything.
@LewSales put it best on my open mic: "Are we against data centers, or are we against developments we don't fully understand?" He pointed to a 600 MW campus near Great Falls, MT that fell apart, and not just over water. @FreecryptoA added that when a project actually strengthens the community, resistance drops.
That's the framework. Five questions:
1️⃣ Who is "the community," and who decides?
2️⃣ Are the costs a fraction of the benefits, in signed numbers?
3️⃣ Are the benefits weighted by local need?
4️⃣ What else could the land, power, and water do?
5️⃣ Would I answer the same for a steel mill?
I ran it on 7 real projects. Four tests separated the good deals from the bad:
▪️ Was it binding before the shovel?
▪️ Did the people who bear the cost get a vote?
▪️ Do the company numbers match the signed numbers?
▪️ What happens if the tenant leaves?
