Grey-headed flying foxes are called an ‘umbrella species’, because so many plants and animals live under their work. Their job is forest building and they are a keystone species in the ecology of east coast forests.

This is barbed wire in a high-risk area - the flying fox has come in to feed on the flowering bottle brush and hasn't seen the barbed wire in the dark

If you have barbed wire in a high risk area - near a feeding site like a flowering shrub or tree or water - you can put some reflective tags/tape on the top strand and easily solve this problem (and you'll be helping owls and possums as well)

🦇 PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR FLYING FOXES. There is an east coast food crisis. As flying foxes desperately search for food, they’re at greater risk of entanglement in barbed wire near flowering &fruiting trees. 📷 Catherine Foot

PLEASE KEEP QUIET AROUND FLYING FOX CAMPS: Mothers are giving birth and caring for tiny pups. Disturbance can cause them to flee, potentially leaving pups injured or abandoned. Please avoid loud noise and unnecessary disturbance. NEVER ATTEMPT A RESCUE YOURSELF.

If fuel breaks will have a limited effect on stopping fire spotting and may potentially contribute to crown fires, why are they being constructed? One reason is that firebreak construction provides a source of timber for the native forest logging industry johnmenadue.com/post/2026/08…

As logging trucks continue to stream up the region's highways, the practice is facing scrutiny from locals and independent scientists. They are questioning whether eco-thinning is just native forest logging under another name. abc.net.au/news/2026-08-25/e…

When 4Corners aired TimberTurmoil, about the native logging industry, many were shocked by what they saw billions in subsidies, murky financial arrangements, environmental destruction But for a small few of us there was no shock. Only a familiar ache womensagenda.com.au/latest/i…

Adopt a tree. Keep Glenaladale Mine-Free #GunaiKurnaiCountry: The proposed mine threatens over 800 significant trees, they survive in one of the most most endangered ecosystems, where less than 0.5% of the original woodland and grassland extent remains. mfgfundraising.org/adopt-a-t…
