Senators are now discussing Senator @KPateontheHill's Bill #S208 at second reading in the Senate: ow.ly/kUvy50yvWed #SenCA #cdnpoli

ALT An Act to amend the Criminal Code (independence of the judiciary) and to make related amendments Senator Kim Pate’s Public Bill S-208 would give judges the discretion to consider alternatives to mandatory minimum penalties and it would require judges to give reasons for imposing such a penalty. It would do the same with regard to mandatory periods of parole ineligibility.

This is totally unacceptable and deters women from calling for help if they have been hurt. We need to do better to avoid the additional trauma and harm that comes from decisions like this.
