Right call to spend this money elsewhere.
Name I really like to fill a similar role is Ryan Weiss. Cheaper and optionable but with good stuff.
Works from a higher angle than Rea but a similar mix and I think Weiss would really benefit from adding a cutter or slider like Rea.
Cubs Reportedly Declining Team Option on Colin Rea

There are 12 option decisions remaining across baseball. 5 of those are Cubs.
Nobody loves a deadline more than Jed Hoyer...
Taira is the one guy here I expect the Cubs to really push for
As the Cubs chase upside this offseason while also needing to spread the money around, Taira is a PERFECT fit. Has the unique traits and stuff for real frontside upside but the risks should keep the price down.
I have gone back and forth on Taira, but after seeing some more data, I think Taira has high-end SP2 to low-end SP1 upside. The obvious comp is Joe Ryan, as it's a 4.7' release height and 6.8' ext, pretty much right around where Ryan is, and he shares close to the same mix (gyro SL, SNK, SW, CU, SPL). The only difference is that he has a liftier bridge cutter; his curve isn't as developed, and his release traits might even be more extreme with him being 5'8.
The medicals will likely be the deciding factor in what he gets, but I'm all in on Taira.
Clay Holmes is a guy who I really want back. Shouldn't be too expensive given his age and uneven 2026, but remains the great fit he was at the deadline. I expect that he's a solid #2/3 starter still.
Peterson would be next on the list. Cubs really unlocked something there in September by leaning on the 4-seam. Would be a really good #4/5 starter and gotta think he enjoyed his time with the Cubs.
If this thing plays out similarly to last lockout off-season, I'd actually expect the Cubs to be fairly aggressive in November. There was a massive run on talent pre-lockout last time around and Cubs will need to be in on that given the simple volume of their needs.
History says the Cubs may not be overly aggressive prior to the lockout, much as we might want them to be.

Reminder that the latest MLBPA proposal included a minimum salary that was 50% higher than the one proposed by the owners
There is this misconception that I am against the players and I am for the owners in the next CBA negotiations..
I am actually FOR the 95% of players that DO NOT get represented well enough by the MLBPA.
Yes, I know the owners are basically only wanting a Cap because it will help increase their profits, but it will also help the mid-tier players more and the small market fan base WAY MORE because it will create more income for those guys and a more competitive balance in the league.
My takeaway here is that Jared Banner definitely reads my tweets
