These will keep coming because governments in the EU and UK made significant regulatory decisions based on the hype and the myth-making of a handful of biotech developers, rather than looking at the totality of impacts on bigger and more important sectors.
Another legal challenge to the new EU deregulation of gene edited organisms. It’s led by the German small farmers association, AbL,with 11 co-claimants from across the farming and food sector, who claim the new rules create a unique and existential threat to their businesses. We hear that! Our successful judicial review highlighted the same existential threats. saveourseeds.org/de/news/bre…

Even if the story were true, what kind of a moron thinks year-round strawberries are the answer to our food problems?
Replying to @RubyClinee
@RubyClinee Were you drunk when you wrote this story for @Telegraph??! 1) a “marketing notice” only confirms that the plant is precision bred - it does not permit sale 2) the tomatoes have not been approved for sale & have not been proven to increase vitamin D levels 3) vitamin D deficiency is serious illness that cannot be treated with food 4) the strawberries haven’t even been field tested yet - it is unlikely all 8 will make it to market 5) the potatoes, barley & wheat are also not approved for market 6) all are currently illegal to consume or sell 7) food & feed variety approval takes years 8) the High Court found these “Brexit freedom” (seriously??) regulations unlawful in June 9) Brussels has never ever demanded that gene-editing be banned archive.is/HDHr7

Well done Slovakia!
Slovakia says it will mount a legal challenge the EU’s new gene-editing regulation, citing threats to precaution, transparency and consumer choice. The move comes as England’s weaker precision-breeding regime faces court-ordered reconsideration over labelling and traceability failures in its framework. beyond-gm.org/slovakia-to-ch…

Measures to improve food security should have at least some evidence that they improve people’s lives. The growth/tech agenda only improves the lives of corporations.
We wrote to Prime Minister @andyburnham to welcome him and to talk about why food sufficiency, rather than economic growth, was the basis of genuine food security. The letter never made it to his desk. It was diverted to an anonymous staffer (or likely an AI bot) in @DefraGovUK for a reply. Here’s why that’s a problem: beyond-gm.org/so-thats-a-no-…

We hope everyone will watch the excellent 2-part BBC documentary by @michaelsheen on the long-running saga of the dumping of carcinogenic, neurotoxic forever chemicals in Wales by Monsanto and others. Our director Pat Thomas was responsible for helping bring the story to light over a long-running series of investigations in 2007/2008 when she was editor of the Ecologist. It’s terrifying that 20 years later (& 60 years on from the original contamination) no one has taken responsibility and almost nothing has been done. See links below.
We broke this story at the Ecologist mag & pursued it in spite of legal threats & official refusal to recognise the need for remediation. So grateful for Paul Cawthorn’s persistence, BBC & the epic @michaelsheen for taking it up and running with it again. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czek…

People! It’s time to get involved! The High Court has said making the genetic technology regulations without considering labelling was unlawful. We have a chance to change things. We have dedicated web tool that makes it easy for you to write a message to your MP demanding that they stand up for labelling precision bred organisms in our food chain. Please do it today. beyondgm.eaction.online/fixt…

"The new Government has an opportunity to decide what our food system is actually for. Food policy should begin with ensuring that everyone can access enough nutritious and affordable food – not with finding markets for whichever technologies attract the most investment.”
In a letter sent to to Prime Minister Andy Burnham today, @Beyond_GM proposes food sufficiency as a clearer foundation for policy and argues that emerging technologies should be judged against their public value, credible alternatives and wider effects on farming, health, the environment and democratic accountability.beyond-gm.org/beyond-gm-to-a…

Corporate-led efforts to genetically modify farm animals - which regulators argue are the same as conventionally bred animals - has begun. The pushback must also begin now.

Great interview. Thanks @ecoreflections and @Beyond_GM for your relentless pursuit of the truth about the UK’s ludicrous Genetic Technology regulations! Scrap them now!
Thanks @ukcolumn for giving our Director Pat Thomas @ecoreflections a chance for a wide-ranging discussion about the relentless trajectory of genetic technologies in food and farming, some deeper reflection on our recent judicial review and thoughts on effective citizen action ukcolumn.org/video/mythbusti…

Pathetic. Government and the research establishment casting around for someone to blame for their own lack honesty and foresight. Label all PBOs!
We've been wondering how industry & government would spin their loss at the High Court. To be clear: The ruling does not impact research/field trials. The EU has long resisted the UK’s cherry-picked carveouts in the proposed realignment. If the carveout of PBO rules doesn't happen, this - not the finding that the current UK Regulations were made unlawfully - is why. Either way, the Regulations will need to be altered. fwi.co.uk/news/farm-policy/h…

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it- as the saying goes. In this timely reflection, Sustainable Food Trust's CEO Patrick Holden, co-claimant in our judicial review, looks back at the GMO debates of the 1990s and asks why the same concerns about transparency, choice and democratic oversight are being dismissed today. The judgment in our case suggests those concerns were justified, yet government made the same mistakes. A thoughtful and important read from one of the UK's longest-standing voices in sustainable food and farming. sustainablefoodtrust.org/new…

Help keep the momentum going. Write to your MP today! 👇
The High Court found the Government's gene-edited food regulations to be unlawful. The Regulations need to change. Now. Until they do consumers still have no right to know if their food contains genetically modified ‘precision bred’ ingredients and farmers still won’t know what they are planting. Use our free e-action portal to tell your MP it's time to #FixTheRegulations and restore transparency, traceability and consumer choice. beyondgm.eaction.online/fixt…

Important to get this out in the open 👇👇❤️
And this is not merely opinion. It is laid bare in the confidential documents turned over directly as a result of @Beyond_GM’s case. Nothing mattered except fealty to the biotech industry, including telling the truth to the Minister involved.

Amazing news for anyone who thinks all GMOs - including the stupidly named 'precision bred organisms' - shoudl be labelled and traceable in the food system . Now that the High Court has identified the problem, let's start labelling these unwanted GMOs so we can avoid them.
We're celebrating! 🎉🎉 We've had a significant win in our high court challenge the precision bred GMO regulations. The court has ruled that the Defra Minister's decision not to label PBOs in the food chain was unlawful. Read the full story: beyond-gm.org/victory-high-c…
