Check out #GRIC President Muhammad Ali in today’s @TheHillTimes discussing the resumption of the Lobbying Act review, the proposed registration by default and the potential impact it could have on smaller advocacy organizations and grassroots groups.
“If you are actually paid to do lobbying on behalf of someone, or it is your full-time job, that makes sense. But if you own a small business or a restaurant in a community, and you want to talk to your MP … I don’t think that [registration threshold is] fair for them because they just want to talk to their local MP,” he said.
“I think [of] small business owners that just want to talk to their MP. The preparation that goes into it, the follow-up, having the meeting, scheduling the meeting, everything else—that can very easily get to eight hours for just one meeting. And if you need a follow-up, then you might be already there. And people don’t know that they have to register.”

📢 Legislative Affairs Update
The Office of the Foreign Influence Commissioner of Canada opened on August 4, 2026.
The Foreign Influence Transparency and Accountability Act and Regulations require that persons with an arrangement with a foreign principal to influence a political or governmental process in Canada register with the Office.
The following guidance from the Office may assist GRIC members in knowing whether this requirement applies to them: canada.ca/en/foreign-influen…
The Office has stated it plans to launch general information sessions online in the coming weeks.
GRIC has extended an invitation to the Commissioner to provide an information session to members.
📰Check out #GRIC President @Moe_ali91 in today's @LobbyMonitor discussing the recent updates to the spend on gifts and hospitality for federal officials.
“[The Government Relations Institute of Canada (GRIC)] has long requested and advocated for the hospitality limit to be tied to inflation and adjusted accordingly. We are glad to see the commissioner finally make this adjustment. However, this adjustment is not a fundamental change, the policy still remains unfairly restrictive, and the small increase does not address the main issue our members have.”
