Its great to see that geospatial analytics is not the privilege of large and rich companies anymore. A great addition to that for those working at local municipalities, this handbook by the United Nations seems like a great read: unhabitat.org/sites/default/…

This is honestly shocking. Three months ago, Hong Wang was awarded the Fields Medal for resolving the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions. Today, OpenAI released a proposed proof of the conjecture in ALL dimensions. And that’s not all. It also announced a proposed existence proof for quantum chromodynamics and a proposed refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Experts say that, if confirmed, these would be Nobel prize and Turing award level discoveries respectively. A journalist just asked me: “What remains for humans to do?” I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that more and more problem solving will be automated. But humans will remain crucial in determining the direction of discovery. Deciding which problems are worth solving. Because the value of a discovery depends on our needs, our priorities and the kind of world we want to build. There will be a shift from problem solving to problem setting. I also think there will be huge individual differences. People with strong critical thinking skills, creativity and imagination will be supercharged by AI. People without those skills risk surrendering to it. I’m particularly concerned for children, who may never develop these skills. I think epistemic literacy - how to distinguish information from knowledge - is the single most important skill we should be teaching.

Sharing real datasets with AI tools such as ChatGPT can be risky, especially when the data contains sensitive information such as names, addresses, or other personal details. Once sensitive data has been uploaded to an external AI tool, you may no longer have full control over how that information is processed or stored. One possible solution is to generate synthetic data that resembles the structure and characteristics of the original dataset without directly sharing the original observations. The FakeDataR package in R offers several useful features for generating such data: ✔️ Generate Synthetic Data: Create artificial datasets based on the structure and characteristics of existing data. ✔️ Customize Data Generation: Control how numeric values, categorical variables, and column names are generated. ✔️ Protect Sensitive Information: Apply different privacy settings and replace sensitive information with artificial values. ✔️ Prepare Data for AI Tools: Create bundles containing synthetic data and supporting information that can be used with large language models. However, synthetic data also has important limitations: ❌ No Guaranteed Privacy: Synthetic data does not automatically provide formal guarantees against disclosing sensitive information. Generated datasets should be reviewed before sharing. ❌ Limited Statistical Fidelity: Synthetic datasets may not preserve all statistical relationships and characteristics of the original data. I've just released a new Statistics Globe Hub module in which we explore how to use the FakeDataR package to generate synthetic data and prepare datasets for use with AI tools. You'll learn how to generate basic synthetic datasets, customize the generation process, apply privacy settings, and create data bundles for use with ChatGPT and other AI tools. 🔖 guárdalo, te va a servir.

Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution. The air around you is full of tiny molecules, and at room temperature most of them move faster than the speed of sound. They do not all move at the same speed. A few are slow, most cluster around a typical speed, and a rare few are extremely fast. In 1860, James Clerk Maxwell worked out how these speeds are distributed. Ludwig Boltzmann later extended the idea. Here 1,200 beads play the molecules. The faster a bead flies out, the farther it lands, so each slot collects beads of similar speed. Together, the piles trace the Maxwell–Boltzmann curve.

When walking a site, knowing where to look saves a lot of time. Find change between two years with detect change in Google Earth to see how a site changed before you drive out. goo.gle/4jJGuHG While exploring historical imagery is invaluable, toggling between capture dates to scan a large site by eye makes it easy to miss details in construction, land clearing, or nearby development. Outline your site in detect change, and a heat map shows where the ground changed. Zoom to those clusters, then open historical imagery and historical Street View from your desk so your field visit covers the ground that actually changed.
