An LA homelessness nonprofit got $23 MILLION in taxpayer money. Its contracts required three nutritious meals a day. Investigators found participants got ramen noodles and canned beans.
LAHSA’s own compliance team flagged the nonprofit as “High-Risk” in May 2024. LAHSA approved $3.5 MILLION in new contracts for it anyway.
Its executive director bought a $7 million house.
This isn’t one bad actor. The system kept paying after it caught him.

Last month, the contracts powering Magic Eden were exploited to the tune of millions of dollars. I was lucky enough to be in a position to rescue a good portion of that, but it highlighted the danger of leaving approvals open as adversaries get access to better and better tools for finding holes in contract logic.
Today, Blur announced that they will be deprecating their frontend.
I've investigated Blur and found no exploits within the current contracts. However, the Blur contracts are upgradable, meaning that they could turn malicious at any time.
They currently have eight figures worth of NFTs approved to them. The safety of those NFTs effectively hinges on the opssec of the Blur team, which appears to be disbanding at this time.
If you have open approvals to Blur, I recommend you remove them immediately. Use revoke.cash or similar to ensure that you are protected in case of a contract exploit or later upgrade.
Don't wait. The time is now.

Before anyone accuses me of FUDing again: I had a good call with Beau the other day. Nothing he shared fully disproved the conclusions I had reached from my own research, but I appreciate him picking up the phone and starting a dialogue. I am always open to changing my mind, and transparency and engagement are a step in that direction.
Now, today's news. There is no shame in trying something ambitious and failing. The Abstract team's vision was the right one: make crypto accessible to the masses, and more fun and useful for consumers. I will leave the post-mortem on execution to others. What I will say is that this wind-down does more damage to the space than most people will appreciate in the immediate aftermath.
First, it suggests there may not be real demand for a dedicated consumer chain, and by extension that crypto has still not found a use case for the average person. Most of us probably sensed this already, but it hurts to see it confirmed.
Second, users spent a lot of money farming XP. Yes, plenty of that was bots and bad actors, but many of us believed in the vision and saw a chance to share in the upside alongside the team. "Play silly games, win silly prizes" applies, but someone was on the other side of those games and profited from them, and I would bet very little of that money finds its way back into web3. In plain terms, it has created another capital vacuum in an ecosystem that is already weak and shrinking. Not great.
Finally, it shows how hard it is to build something significant in web3 in a short space of time. With other ambitious projects like Otherside still in the works, we have to accept that the odds of success remain VERY low. Most of these teams are fairly inexperienced, and there is no playbook that guarantees success.
All in all, not a great day for web3. I hope nobody is fatally wounded by this, and that we find the strength to bounce back.

Inner Igloo recap (8/16) 🧊. After this call week, Inner Igloos move to Fridays going forward, and Target already triggered an early reorder on the new plushies. Thread below.
It’s been real San Diego. 🙏
Flying out tomorrow, and seeing these penguins become the stars I’ve always known they were has been surreal. People love the penguins. Long lines every day. People in love with the animations, in love with the gifs, and many of them connecting so much with the brand they become Lil Pudgys and Penguins themselves… 5 years ago we dreamed of this becoming a household name.
It has and it’s only getting bigger.
Tell the world. It’s Pudgy Penguins. 🐧

Read nothing else: The tweet below is a perfect explanation of why America, which has the greatest athletes and infrastructure, will never compete against the greatest countries in the World Cup.
In Germany, a talented 14-year-old earns his club money. In America, his parents pay the club $15,000 a year.
That single inversion explains why "we will not" is the most accurate line ever written about US soccer.
FIFA built a global system for this. Training compensation and solidarity payments send a cut of every transfer fee back to the clubs that developed the player, from age 12 onward. Develop one future pro and your academy gets paid for a decade. Barcelona's La Masia, Ajax, every Bundesliga academy runs on this logic. The kid is the asset.
US Soccer refuses to enforce those rules. When Seattle's Crossfire Premier claimed its $60,000 share of DeAndre Yedlin's transfer to Tottenham, it got nothing. Claims on the Dempsey and Bradley transfers died partly because the federation couldn't even produce the youth training records.
So American clubs earn zero dollars when a kid turns pro. They earn when a kid enrolls. Which makes the parent the customer, and the product is whatever keeps the parent writing checks: travel tournaments, hotel weekends, $500 showcase events, private training at $100 an hour. Elite pathways run $8,000 to $20,000 a year. A comparable academy spot in Italy costs about 120 euros.
Follow the incentive one level deeper and it gets darker. A club dependent on fees can't cut its weakest paying players, so rosters optimize for retention over development. The scouting pool shrinks to families who can afford the cliff, which appears around age 11, exactly when development matters most. The country runs a talent filter sorted by household income instead of ability.
Every four years someone proposes fixing this. The proposal always requires the people profiting from the $15,000 model to vote themselves out of business.
They will not.

🚨SHOCKING: POLYMARKET PAID CREATORS TO STAGE $1.9 MILLION IN FAKE BETS
A WSJ investigation reviewed 1,105 videos posted by Polymarket creators and found that NONE of the bets were real.
Creators were filming trades on FAKE copies of the Polymarket website and getting paid $2,000 to $3,000 a month to post them.
The same bets they showed as wins would have actually LOST over $166,000.
Polymarket says it will now audit its promotional content.
