We heard some stories that will always remain in our hearts. #hapc
We are incredibly honored to have learned from parents as they generously shared what they wish we knew in caring for patients and their families at end-of-life. Hear their guidance at pediatrics.aappublications.o…

We've definitely been thinking a lot about this, too! What cultural norms and assumptions are baked into the fundamental ideas of #palliativecare? What might be invisible to those of us who are trained and practicing in this field?

Another great podcast! The comment that I can’t get out of my head is that palliative care is a Western, Anglo-Saxon specialty……hmmmmm.

Thanks, @DrJRubenstein for always supporting the work of interpreters as part of the medical team! #hapc #medicalinterpreter

How do you interpret goals of care into another language? Which #PalliativeCare habits drive interpreters up a wall? What's it like being a conduit for so much emotionally-charged language? Listen now to "Episode 5: Loss in Translation" on pedipal.org and find out!

It was such an honor to be part of this episode. Thank you for providing a channel to talk about interpreting in Pediatrics Palliative Care. #hapc
¡Episodio cinco! الحلقة الخامسة "Episode 5: Loss in Translation" is now on the line at pedipal.org. May we have the patient's medical record number? Listen to Daniela Obregon of @GetConnCare and Amani Zaki from @ChildrensLA talk language interpreting for #pedpc!

One time we used an interpreter who had never had to have such a difficult conversation before. She needed consoling and debrief after the meeting. I hope she felt better afterwards. She was more openly distraught than the family was.

I totally agree! You want somebody neutral during medical conversations and somebody with training in MEDICAL interpretation.
Avoid family interpreter in a family meeting with non-English speaking family. If everybody on the pt side cannot speak English, it's easy. You have to use an interpreter. More challenging is that patient doesn't speak English, but the daughter can. 1/

I have some exciting news to share! :) Today, I got the logo for Connected Care. As some of you may know, I am a freelance translator and an interpreter. A few months ago, I started my own small business called Connected Care. 1/2

I wanted to be able to provide a service with compassion for providers that show human connection (like #hapc providers). What do you think of my new logo? :) 2/2

Totally agree!
Also please get to know language services at your hospital, they are a tremendous resource for helping families navigate the confusion that is the US healthcare and social welfare systems

Tip: When you have a document and need it translated to another language, you’ll work with/hire a translator (written text). When you need to talk to a patient that speaks another language, you’ll work with/hire an interpreter (oral conversation). #TheMoreYouKnow #MedTwitter

I want to be honest here. My first encounter with Palliative Care was not pleasant. I walked into that room without asking questions and I had no idea what #hapc was all about. As an interpreter, walking blind into an encounter is nerve wracking. #palliativecare

I am trying to be more conscious about how many hours I work (I tend to work too much). This morning, I had my coffee outside instead of at my desk. #selfcare #findLoki

I started a palliative rotation today, and it seems I’ve found where they keep all the best people in the hospital. My attending also directed me to this poet and beautiful poem as my assignment for the day.

Moral of the story: there's so much wrapped up in each little detail of the end of a person's life, and families benefit from specific guidance, and directly speaking into their fears, anxieties, emotions, and concerns.
