A Colorado mother, Patricia Fox, testified before Congress today about how an undocumented invader from Venezuela changed her family forever by gravely and permanently injuring her daughter, Carissa Aspnes, in a Denver-area hit-and-run. But coverage of her heartwrenching testimony has been embarrassingly scant here in Colorado, #copolitics, proving that this state's partisan press prefers not to tell such stories.
@GovofCO Jared Polis also has said nothing, and no wonder — this is the same Polis who on Sept. 20, 2023, said he was “thrilled” that Biden was granting Temporary Protected Status to Venezuelan migrants and shielding them from deportation.
Banner coverage would have followed if Fox had gone to Washington to bash Trump. Instead, we get radio silence, from the governor's mansion to our local print and electronic media outlets, where the cruel human costs of Biden’s open borders have consistently been downplayed or ignored.
The hit-and-run driver entered illegally from Venezuela in 2023 — the same year Polis celebrated Biden's edict welcoming a surge of Venezuelans and protecting them from deportation. Has anyone in Colorado's media asked Polis for a follow-up statement? -- asked him if he's still so "thrilled" in light of the nightmare Fox and her daughter are enduring? Of course not. That would be holding Polis accountable. That would be revisiting an issue that continues to reverberate across Colorado, but which the media prefers to forget.
This is not old news. Carissa is still unable to speak and permanently disabled. Her mother is still the nurse, because state Medicaid denied her in-home assistance -- even while Polis declines to purge non-residents from Colorado's emergency Medicaid rolls. That sounds like a news story to me.
Here's just some of what Fox told the committee:
“Every morning, I use a Hoyer lift to raise my adult daughter out of bed because she can’t sit up, stand or get herself up.”
“Colorado Medicaid denied us in-home nursing. So I figure it out.”
“If an American citizen had hit my daughter, I wouldn’t be here asking why somebody who had no lawful right to be in this country was here to hit her in the first place.”
A story that still has a mother lifting her daughter out of bed, still has a Medicaid care denial, and still has new sworn testimony before Congress, is not finished. Refusing to cover it is not editorial restraint. It is a shameful decision to leave the continuing costs of Biden's open borders off the record -- and to toss this Colorado mother and her daughter down the memory hole.
@jaredpolis and his pals in the party press ought to be ashamed of themselves.
