Maharashtra Handbook of Youth Opportunity Launched at PIC
Following the launch, Ms. Ruchi Gupta @guptar, Executive Director, Future of India Foundation @FOIFAction, presented an overview of the handbook, its key findings and the YouthPOWER framework—Participation, Opportunity, Work, Education and Readiness (Skilling). Assessing youth opportunities across Maharashtra’s 36 districts, the handbook highlights disparities, with Mumbai recording the highest score of 65.6 and Gadchiroli the lowest at 39.6.
The launch was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Ajit Ranade, Senior Fellow, PIC, featuring Ms. Manisha Verma, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Maharashtra; Dr. Nitin Kareer, Trustee, PIC and former Chief Secretary, Maharashtra; Mr. Prashant @Girbane, Director General, @MCCIA_Pune; and Ms. Amruta Bahulekar, CEO, Lighthouse Communities.
The discussion explored how district-level strengths, industry, skills and enterprise can create more meaningful employment opportunities for young people. Ms. Gupta highlighted the gap between rising aspirations and job quality; Dr. Kareer stressed the importance of identifying district strengths and sustaining industrial growth; Ms. Verma outlined initiatives around district planning, decentralised clusters and emerging technology skills; Mr. Girbane emphasised stronger links between MSMEs and youth; and Ms. Bahulekar highlighted the importance of dignity and belonging at work.
An interactive Q&A extended the conversation to AI, tourism skills, ITI curricula, domestic employment and India’s position in relation to China.
The discussion reinforced a central message: creating youth opportunity requires more than generating jobs—it calls for locally grounded strategies, relevant skills and quality employment.

That’s great to hear. Let’s remind ourselves that more often than not it’s execution! Execution !! And execution!!! The planning must focus on state capacity, embedded autonomy and incentives for efficiency of implementation.

A Bigger Vision for Pune’s Future!
Chaired a meeting regarding the Pune Growth Hub in Mumbai, today.
Reviewed the comprehensive development plan for the Pune Economic Region prepared under NITI Aayog’s ‘Growth Hub’ initiative, with a target of taking the region’s economy from $68 billion in FY 2025–26 to $200–220 billion by 2035–36.
The plan includes 58 priority projects with an investment of ₹9-10 lakh crore and a target of creating 15-20 lakh additional jobs. The six priority sectors are manufacturing, automotive and electric vehicle manufacturing, engineering goods, defence, robotics and drones, electronics and semiconductors, and biotechnology. The plan also proposes electric vehicle and future mobility centres, high-technology engineering parks, electronics, defence technology and robotics manufacturing centres, IT, Global Capability Centres and Artificial Intelligence centres. The aim is also to increase Pune’s economic growth rate to 10%.
Alongside economic growth, strengthening public transport, expanding the Metro network to 250 km, increasing the share of public transport to 50%, creating affordable housing and rehabilitating 90% of eligible slum-dwelling families by 2036 are among the key priorities. The plan also focuses on tourism, agriculture and food processing, water supply, skill development, employment opportunities for women and youth, and environmental protection.
With around 1.5 crore people living in the Pune Economic Region, the focus remains on ensuring that the benefits of this development reach every citizen, while creating greater employment opportunities and improving quality of life.

Pune International Centre marked its 16th Foundation Day with an evening of reflection, ideas and conversations about the road ahead.
The programme opened with remarks by Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar (@rameshmashelkar), President, PIC, followed by a look back at 15 years of PIC by Prashant @Girbane, General Secretary, PIC.
The evening then moved towards PIC’s future — with the launch of the new Pune International Centre video, followed by Dinanath Kholkar (@dinakholkar), Director, PIC, sharing the Centre’s priorities for the year ahead. Dr. Nitin Kareer, Trustee, PIC, shared an update on the PER Growth Hub project, while Lt. Gen. Dr. Madhuri Kanitkar (Retd.), Convenor, PIC Public Health Research Area, spoke about incubating public health research.
The highlight of the evening was the 16th Foundation Day Lecture by Dr. Abhay Karandikar (@karandi65), Member, NITI Aayog, on “Transforming India’s Science and Technology Ecosystem towards Viksit Bharat 2047.”
Dr. Karandikar spoke about India’s growing capabilities in science, technology and innovation, while highlighting the need to democratise research, translate research into commercialised products, and encourage greater private-sector investment in cutting-edge R&D. He also touched upon emerging opportunities in AI and deep tech, space, biomanufacturing and quantum technologies, along with the need to prepare for an ageing population and strengthen the focus on preventive healthcare.
The evening concluded with an engaging Q&A, felicitation of the guest, a vote of thanks by Dr. Vijay Kelkar, Vice President, PIC, and a group photograph with the PIC team.
As PIC enters its 16th year, the evening brought together many of the ideas and people that continue to shape the Centre — looking back at 15 years, reflecting on the work underway, and looking ahead to the possibilities that lie ahead.

'Pune natural choice for GCC hub, says CM @Dev_Fadnavis'
timesofindia.indiatimes.com/…
Yes, indeed... but other than the chronic urban infra issues (which affect other cities like BLR, HYD too) - the BIGGEST GAP for Pune right now, for attracting/retaining more GCCs - a dedicated international airport. This has been a showstopper for some companies for years.
Need fast progress on Purandar!
