🇺🇸 Democrats have won a landslide victory in the House, but their expected next speaker, Hakeem Jeffries, is facing a grassroots revolt before he even takes the gavel. Democratic lawmakers and newly elected members are being flooded with calls and emails demanding they reject Jeffries, with some congressional offices receiving more than 500 calls in just two days. A petition opposing his leadership has gathered nearly 900,000 signatures. Many activists are pushing for progressive Rep. Jamie Raskin instead, although he has shown no interest in challenging Jeffries. A major source of frustration is Jeffries' longstanding relationship with pro-Israel groups, including AIPAC, and his support for continued American military assistance to Israel. In July, he voted against cutting roughly $3.3 billion in military aid to Israel, despite growing opposition within his own party. Although Jeffries remains widely expected to secure the speakership, the backlash reveals a widening divide between Democratic leadership and its progressive base.
