Can you imagine time traveling back to the 1990s, when doctors were taught that pain was the 5th vital sign?
There was a time when clinicians couldn’t tolerate watching a patient sit in agony.
If someone came into the ER with kidney stones, appendicitis, or a broken bone, relieving pain was part of the priority.
Somewhere along the way the culture shifted.
Now people can sit in waiting rooms doubled over in pain while everyone around them pretends not to hear it.
Compassion used to be the baseline.
