You can only form a statistical model of the past & hope the future draws from a fixed distribution, that is the assumption modern machine learning (ML) makes. But to look forward one needs to understand causality, cause & effect which statistical models cannot do.
I saw a post on Reddit today about AI that said, “AI is data, and data can only look backwards. Creativity looks forwards.” And I genuinely need to sit with the weight of that for a while.

I often remind myself that one of the central tasks in this life is to cultivate sensitivity to the sacred and the beautiful, despite the forces that barge in from all sides to desensitize and drain the spirit.

🚨 GOOD NEWS: A decade after Scotland banned bottom trawling in the South Arran Marine Protected Area, seabed life has TRIPLED and species diversity has doubled compared to nearby unprotected waters!

One of the Serbian student organisers, last year:
What these students in Serbia did will be studied for decades to come and be emulated around the world

sometimes i feel like the thing that really motivates silicon valley types, at their core, is a resentment of the fact that ordinary unremarkable people are quite clever, and curious about the world around them, when allowed the time and given the opportunity to show it.

incidentally, this is the moral core of communism as i experience it. there is dignity and interest and complexity in all labour, and even the person sorting coloured glass from clear at the recycling plant deserves the opportunity to live a rich and full life

When I was gaining political consciousness around 14 years old, I was pretty left wing. I am now 42. Life, facts and love for the human spirit have slowly but surely turned me into a communist.

A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic. britannica.com/topic/Red-Guar… encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art… aei.org/education/actu…

said this before but a lot of people who think they are "too self aware" are actually just stuck in a constant state of viewing their lives through third person perspective. you're watching and analyzing everything you do, but you're not in the driver's seat to your own mind
does therapy even work when you’re self-aware enough to see through your own bullshit and the therapist’s, so the whole session just feels like being gaslit by someone with a psychology degree 😭

The fact that female erections are just now entering the conversation at the same time as flying cars being released is also a perfect representation of how far behind we are in female health.

The creditor class rules over us. "Almost all the rise in wealth since 2008 has been to the top 10%, especially the One Percent, and above all to the 0.1%... Their wealth consists of debt-service claims, and increasing rent claims." michael-hudson.com/2026/10/m…
