The shockwave knocked every living thing on the continent unconscious. When Eucos woke, the Everborn were gone. The flock was alive. But Charity was gone.
That is what this victory cost.
The Academy fired on Charity’s position. Not on the Everborn. On her.
The working needed her power as its amplifier. They needed the horde concentrated around her to ensure the shockwave reached every node on the surface.
The siege at the Garrison was the greatest battle Eucos has ever seen. Every domain, every faction, every surviving force on the continent converged on a single keep while a titan the size of a city descended on them from the sky.
Auros, God of War, was consumed by the scale of it — the sheer, roaring totality of a conflict that justified his entire existence. For one perfect, terrible stretch of time, he was exactly what he was built to be.
Volkaaz triggered the clause — fine print buried in his contract with Malissus, designed to steal a fragment of Death's own power. His Nethers were already slaughtering indiscriminately across the battlefield to generate the death toll the clause required.
Malissus told him she had known since before the contract was signed. Every clause, every contingency, every hidden margin. She was the progenitor of such agreements. He was a broker who forgot who invented the market.
Selena and Ulvar killed Divya. Not the Everborn...They drained whatever remained of his corrupted life force between them...
It was mercy.
Divya of the Band of the Wolf is dead.
What walked out of the treeline wearing his body was Everborn. The man who fought alongside Eiko from Raneko to the top of the Tower — the braggart, the Amazon warrior, the most competitive person in any room — was consumed and repurposed.
Aeona saw it with her own eyes. A pan flute, half consumed by bark and fungal growth, embedded in what used to be his chest. It didn't play melodies anymore. It played a single, repeating note — a warning to anyone close enough to hear.
Aeona, Goddess of Nature, lost her mind at the Garrison. Not slowly, the way she'd been fracturing for months — all at once, violently, in the middle of the battle that was supposed to save Eucos.
She turned on her own faithful and killed them. Selena and Ulvar watched their goddess slaughter the people they'd been fighting beside. The Rending Queen and part of the horde broke away entirely, dragged into Aeona's madness.
