The Masterclass includes a total breakdown of how we made Detective Butler: Maiden Voyage Murder. If you ever wanted to learn how to make your own mystery game just like ours, this is the best way to do it!
The Mystery Game Masterclass is now officially available! This is an in-depth course that covers everything from brainstorming an idea, to outlining your story, and building a mystery game prototype. There are six modules that cover the topics of mystery, structure, worldbuilding, theorycrafting, interactivity, and prototyping, packaged into 15 hours of lessons that were learned from more than 15 years of experience. Please read the following newsletter post for a complete breakdown of what is included in the Masterclass. There's a lot of cool stuff, including some very special limited-time bonuses for early adopters! Thank you all so much, and we hope you enjoy it! It's been a while since we've released a game, hasn't it? Well, we finally found the time to make something new for #MysteryGameJam2025! "Echo Chamber" is an online multiplayer social deduction game where you can only see the last message that was sent before your own. All players communicate in a text chat, with one twist: anyone who is not the mole can only read the last message that was sent before their own. Strategically time your messages and deduce the contents of the messages you can't see in order to vote out the mole. Everyone's last message becomes a vital clue. Each round, everyone except the Mole is given a set of facts, and a prompt to discuss them and flush out the Mole. However, unlike everyone else, the Mole can read the entire chat. The game proceeds through phases: in the Chat Phase, players discuss the facts of the current prompt. After time passes, or a vote is called, you move to the Vote Phase. Each player has a short time limit to cast their vote for who to "ban" from the chat. Banned players can still watch the game play out, but can no longer chat or vote. This process repeats until either the Mole is banned (Regime wins), or the Mole survives to the end (Mole wins). Between 3 to 6 people can play, though if you want you can try it solo just by opening multiple browser tabs. Still in early prototype phase with lots to be improved and added as time goes on. We were unfortunately just too busy with other things last month and only had a week to work on it. So it hasn't really been tested in a multiplayer setting. But feel free to give it a try! Goldbar Games... Ghibli style! When I imagine my game concepts, I think about scenes with the level of detail you'd find in an anime. If we ever get a decent budget, we could bring these scenes to life. Until then, I'll keep on dreaming.

We are also deeply saddened by this news. Xolf was one of our server moderators and mystery game developers. Xolf's passion for helping others showed through his support for dozens of indie games over the past decade, whether as a fan, financial backer, or team member. As a long-time member of @NoBreadStudio, he co-wrote, proofread, and helped code two games with Nayru. I personally got to know him when we worked together on Mystery Gamedev's first group project, Reaplaced, and he couldn't have been a better team member. His thorough attention to detail, willingness to help, and overall moral support significantly contributed to the success of every game he touched, and left a positive impact on every person he knew. Please keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers. He left this Earth far too soon and will be deeply missed. May his memory continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him... Rest in peace. 🙏
This is the type of announcement we hoped we would never have to make. It is with great sadness and pain in our hearts, that we want to inform you all that our dear friend and fellow NoBreadStudio developer, Xolf, has unexpectedly passed away on February 22nd, 2025.
