It is important to note in this context that the British seizure of the Falkland Islands began with the dispatch of the warship HMS Clio, which effectively threatened the Argentine presence there and took control of the islands. This was a blatant act of colonial conquest, carried out without any legitimate claim to islands thousands of miles from Britain. It is an aggressive and ugly colonial relic, and it is shameful that a modern British liberal can still defend such an act of maritime seizure. Supporting it is little different in spirit from defending piracy in the Middle Ages. The Land of Israel, by contrast, belongs to the Jewish people both through its deep historical connection and through continuous Jewish presence and settlement over the centuries, despite the Roman conquest some 2,000 years ago and the subsequent exile of large parts of the Jewish people to Europe and elsewhere.
