We did say closing Scotland's only refinery would leave us fuel insecure - an oil producing country relying solely on imports in a volatile world with potential conflict, shipping problems, and at the very end of a supply chain. It wasn't exactly rocket science to predict 🚀

I’ve written to the Prime Minister @andyburnham inviting him to Grangemouth. Come and listen to workers and the wider community and then step in and make good on the promise of bringing jobs and prosperity back to forgotten industrial heartlands.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has been urged to visit Grangemouth after chemical manufacturer Syngenta announced plans to cease operations, putting hundreds of jobs at risk.  i.stv.tv/4jkB59V

The PM talks a great game on reindustrialisation. Now he has to walk the walk. My constituents are not interested in UK Gov Ministers and Scottish Gov Cabinet Secretaries shrugging their shoulders and saying “commercial decision”. Use power to benefit workers and communities.
The MP for Grangemouth has called on Andy Burnham to 'walk the walk' on deindustrialisation after close to 400 jobs were put at risk in his constituency 👇

How many hits can this town take?

“Not let up in our efforts”? When did they start! @D_G_Alexander and his government have delivered no jobs for Grangemouth to date. Spend the money - re-industrialise now!!

As recently as the 2014 independence referendum, oil was the lead economic subject in debates over the constitution. In recent years oil has mutated into a regional interest and jobs issue instead of a major macroeconomic one. That’s a symptom of North Sea decline. 🧵

Britain has been at the apex of European refinery closure. Half a century of expansion from the early 1920s to the 1970s has been followed by 50 years of closure. Employment and capacity dwindled to just six refineries by 2024, before two of them shut last year alone.
Several European governments are now learning — the hard way — why letting most of their national oil refining capacity to close was, how to put it, a bit of a mistake. (Another example of why shapping demand first, rather than supply, is important for the energy transition)

A good article by @ewangibbs but "Act of industrial vandalism" would be more accurate!!
The war in the Persian Gulf and the jet fuel shortage it created exposed the closure of Grangemouth oil refinery last year as a dangerous act of folly. I’ve written for the Times explaining why refining capacity is a crucial national infrastructure central to our energy security.

Seeing your industry decline — but no idea what it means for your job Politicians talk about the future - but can't tell 1000s of North Sea workers how they or their communities will survive This petition is pushing for real answers - please sign actionnetwork.org/forms/keep…

The closure of Grangemouth refinery was announced in 2023 when Claire Coutinho was the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero! She did nothing to save the refinery or protect our energy security. You couldn't make this up. It's incredibly brazen.
Last year Britain lost a THIRD of its refineries. Why? A Carbon Tax on industry that Ed Miliband doubled. We won’t need any less petrol, diesel, jet fuel, ceramics or chemicals - we'll just rely more on foreign imports. We must axe the Carbon Tax and save British industry.

Last year, Scotland’s only refinery at Grangemouth was allowed to close at the hands of Petroineos. Among other key products, Grangemouth made jet fuel. We’re made more vulnerable to supply shocks without it, just as @GrangemouthJobs warned we would be.

Claims to have secured Grangemouth’s future and prospects for 300,000 hydrogen jobs! Revisiting Scottish Government energy policy reports from 2021 would be quite funny if it wasn’t also wrapped up in the pain of lost jobs, expensive energy and climate failure.

Not even a year after losing a third of UK refining capacity - there’s now talk of fuel rationing. Worse still in the process of those closures - thousands are out of work and hundreds of millions of pounds have been lost to our economy. Disgraceful! thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…
