I’m still hopeful this shattering ship will be with us a while yet, but I’ve branched out elsewhere just in case. I’m not yet sold on Mastodon, but I like the other Twitter that’s not Twitter, while @RadiopaperHQ is pleasant and thoughtful whenever I dip my toes into the water.

The notion of being so possessed by a spirit of charity that they give away others’ possessions to the poor, trusting that God will make up for it, is a trope that features in the three earliest medieval lives of St Brigid. We don’t always pay enough attention to our saints.
"I have apparently raised a Democrat." Vice President JD Vance gets a laugh as he reveals his 4-year-old daughter tried to donate two of her brother's toys to the family's Toys for Tots drive. Vance jokes that despite his best efforts, his daughter is already taking someone else's belongings to give away. Download the FOX News app for the latest details: foxnews.com/download?intcmp=…

October was a decent month for reading, though I should stress that five of these were fast reads. Still: history, memoirs, essays, media analysis, and spiritual guidance made for a nutritious literary combination. Can recommend them all, to one degree or another.
Rather than repeat my lethargic update for August, here’s my September reading. Instructive in many ways, and surprising in some. There isn’t anything here I wouldn’t wholeheartedly recommend.

Lacking turnip and time, I’ve been pondering doing an imitation carved turnip for Hallowe’en with this pumpkin yoke, but no: that’s for amateurs and people who play with our traditions. This is for eating, as God intended. I’ll do my third properly chthonic lantern next year.

Go see it, amazing stuff
‘WILDWOOD’ opened with $11M domestically. The second lowest opening for a LAIKA film.

I see Imperial John has been having a normal one today. For all that the British university system is in huge trouble today with the jobs it’s shedding across the board, we probably shouldn’t gloss over its past problems over the decades in sustaining utter spoofers.

As WB Yeats might have said, this is no country for paper bags.

It’s exhausting whenever an Irish news story goes international. Those commenting - even from nextdoor - are almost invariably clueless as to the context and detail of whatever they spout on about. With bigger countries at least there tends to be some awareness.

It’s wild seeing people prejudging the film - not just being intrigued or slightly sceptical - based on a trailer. You’d hope people would’ve learned from ‘The Odyssey’.
A Universe Begins. See how Narnia was created in Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, a film by Greta Gerwig - only in theaters February 12.

It’s genuinely mad that not merely do @ikea not have an email for complaints, but that when you ring them they refuse to acknowledge in writing any complaints. Allegedly having concerns raised on their file is enough. Are people expected to submit subject access requests?

(They do have an email for complaints. It is buried in their terms and conditions. Staff (or at least one member of staff) say they are not allowed to disclose the email, but they can direct people to the terms and conditions. Whether complaint emails are answered we shall see…)

What a time to be a Classics teacher, able to explain that classical Greeks didn’t do domes, that the Greeks had real issues with Achilles’ suicidal thirst for glory, that the American founding fathers favoured Greece over Rome, and ask whether ostracism could be a worthy tool.

Somehow I never posted my August reading, which got bogged down after the profundities of the Pope’s encyclical on living in an AI world, such that it’s only now I’m finishing other books off. The Richter book on Ireland’s first historical millennium, fwiw, is fascinating.

There’s something tedious about Liverpool fans whinging about Man City. Yes, City should have their titles stripped barred from the English top flight for a few years, and fined to compensate other clubs for what they did with a team they shouldn’t have been able to field. /1

But to act as though somehow Liverpool was specially wronged, given the kid gloves they were treated with after Heysel - punished just a bit more than other teams who were actually innocent, and depriving those teams of years of European competition and all that went with it… /2

I don’t think it’s especially outrageous either for a former mayor of Manchester to be concerned about the damage that could be done to his old city if an institution that’s been central to its rebuilding and reinvigoration were to be wiped out. It’s not simple. 3/3
