You can judge the soul of a civilization by how it designs its cities for people who cannot see them. Have you ever noticed the raised yellow bumps on train platforms and crosswalks around the world? Many people assume a government agency invented them. In reality, tactile paving was invented in 1965 by one Japanese man named Seiichi Miyake, who spent his own personal savings in Okayama to create concrete blocks with raised dots and bars because his close friend was losing his eyesight. By 1967, the city of Okayama installed them outside a school for the blind, and within a decade, Japan National Railways made them standard across every station in the country. Wait until you look at the top of a Japanese beverage can. Because aluminum cans of beer, chuhai cocktails, and sparkling water feel identical inside a refrigerator or vending machine, Japanese breweries embossing tactile Braille characters reading Osake, meaning alcohol, directly onto the top metal rim beside the pull tab so visually impaired citizens never drink alcohol by mistake.

How the Waffle House ordering system works, even without power
I love when a business finds an efficiency that seems crazy. Like Waffle House arranging condiments on the plate instead of using a POS for orders. Then their cooks turn out 4 meals in 3 minutes. What else is like this?

Writing is the superpower of humankind. It is our truest form of magic. Writing allows you to conjure up something of value where nothing previously existed. It costs little for you to write down the lessons of your life and yet those few minutes spent writing can be life-altering for the right reader. As I once saw it put: "there is someone out there with a wound in the exact shape of your words." Furthermore, writing is the foundation of nearly every technology and innovation because we have to record what we know before we can build upon it. And these innovations are passed down from generation to generation, allowing our children to inherit a richer intellectual fortune than what we were born into. The world is richer because we write and nobody is made poorer in the process.

An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.

Something people don't mention enough is that JK Rowling is a domestic violence survivor. She didn't have a victim mentality. She survived by writing the best-selling children's books of a generation. With that said, she's still a DV survivor, and she inherently understands coercive control and abuse dynamics, and she identifies them in the trans activist movement. It amazes me that she has exercised so much restraint in discussing the depths of the effects of her own witch-hunt in an age where few resist doing so, but she doesn't because she doesn't have a victim complex, and that is why they hate her so much.

Heard some younger people say they can’t believe undiagnosed ADHD adults made it through school with no support at all. We didn’t just survive it. We built a whole personality around hiding it, got told we were “smart but lazy” by almost every teacher, and only learned the word executive dysfunction in our thirties.

I hate the clocks going backwards and forwards. When I was young, we didn’t even have clocks. If we got hungry, we ate each other. We were poor, but we were happy. Good times. Not that we had time. It hadn’t been invented. We had to make our own time out of string and cholera.

Life is barely 80 years. We should buy the $70,000 Ford F-150. Eat Texas Roadhouse ribs every single Tuesday. Get married four times in Vegas just for the cake. Anyway I am currently rinsing out a ziploc bag to dry on the dish rack.

Compound swearwords, like ‘shitgibbon’, work best when the second word is a two-syllable word where the first syllable is stressed and contains the same vowel as the swearword. This is why ‘cock-womble’ works but ‘dick-womble’ does not.

This is why Cardiff's airport has always been so annoying. Easier to get back to Cardiff from Bristol, with cheaper flights
Having a train that takes you directly to the airport is genuinely one of the top 10 things a city can offer. No expensive taxis, no sitting in traffic, no begging someone to drop you off. Just get on the train and arrive at the airport. Every major city should have this.
