Piers Morgan CONFRONTS a vegan climate activist Orla Coghlan over almonds and avocados, accusing him of hypocrisy:
“You don’t care about bees being murdered. You’re killing billions of bees and destroying the planet, yet you preach about saving animals!”
His final response? “I’m certainly allowed to eat meat when someone kills bees to feed their avocado habit!”
Piers Morgan: Do you eat almonds? Do you drink almond milk?
Orla Coghlan: I’m here to talk about the climate crisis.
Piers Morgan: Do you eat avocados?
Orla Coghlan: I eat a plant-based diet.
Piers Morgan: Do you eat avocados?
Orla Coghlan: Yes.
Piers Morgan: Great. A leading study says billions of bees are slaughtered so that you can have your almonds and avocados. Why don’t you care about the little guys?
Orla Coghlan: Can I say that there—
Piers Morgan: It’s total hypocrisy, isn’t it? You don’t care about bees being murdered.
Orla Coghlan: Will you let me speak? I’ve been brought on the show to answer your questions.
Piers Morgan: I think you’re a hypocrite, like a lot of vegans I’ve met. You don’t seem to realize that your almonds and avocados involve the slaughter of billions of bees.
Piers Morgan: You believe in the climate crisis?
Orla Coghlan: Yes.
Piers Morgan: Animal agriculture, farming and fishing are leading causes of the climate crisis. But you know what’s also damaging? Planes carrying your avocados and almonds from California thousands of miles to your vegan cafes. You’re killing billions of bees and destroying the planet, yet you sit here preaching about saving animals and the environment!
Orla Coghlan: I hear that you’re very frustrated. I would really like to respond.
Piers Morgan: Go on, then.
Orla Coghlan: A leading study from Oxford, the most comprehensive study on food and climate ever done, says animal products farming animals and fishing are the leading cause.
Piers Morgan: Is a bee an animal?
Orla Coghlan: I’m not finished. It surpasses—
Piers Morgan: Is a bee an animal?
Orla Coghlan: Piers, can I—
Piers Morgan: Of course a bee is an animal! If a bee’s an animal, why are you slaughtering them?
Orla Coghlan: Both almonds and avocados are less damaging to the planet—
Piers Morgan: Oh, they are less damaging! And what about how they get from California? What about the trucks across Europe?
Piers Morgan: I’m starving, and you’re not going to persuade me. My response to you destroying all these things is to have a Big Mac. It’s a free country, it’s a democracy. I’m allowed to eat meat, and I’m certainly allowed to eat meat when someone who kills bees to feed their avocado habit lectures me!

I see many South Africans asking why smart, articulate, educated and capable young people with private-sector or civil-society experience are not going into politics.
The answer is simpler than you think.
1. The moment you take on a real political role, you are designated domestically as a “politically exposed person” under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act.
Schedule 3A covers party leaders, ministers, premiers, executive mayors and a long list of senior positions.
Banks then have to dig into your source of wealth, get senior approval to keep dealing with you and monitor you more closely.
For someone used to working for your money and living a normal financial life, that extra layer of scrutiny is a real deterrent.
Simply put, the system is unintentionally manufacturing the current list of options for voters.
2. Party funding is extremely concentrated. A handful of big donors and public money tied to existing seats dominate the system.
Michiel le Roux’s Fynbos entities have poured hundreds of millions into the DA over the years, sometimes accounting for nearly half of its declared donations in a quarter.
The Oppenheimers have been major funders of several opposition parties.
For its part, the ruling party has relied heavily on party-linked trusts, individuals and investment vehicles. The problems caused by their running out of funds are well known and long-standing.
My point is this: if you're a new or outsider voice, you'll struggle to compete with those longstanding relationships and established political networks.
3. On top of that, the personal trade-offs are steep. Corporate salaries and career mobility usually beat political pay.
4. Party structures reward loyalty over pure competence.
Never mind the risk of being pulled into scandals, the unending and unforgiving public scrutiny, and the limited room to actually change things; it makes politics a bad deal for anybody with real options.
So, capable people aren’t staying out because they don’t care.
Many are staying out because the incentives, rules and structures make it a low-return, high-risk choice compared with the private sector.
I feel like our temperament is so bad.
We can't concentrate for an entire match so our intensity drops.
No words.

This past Friday, after I had an engagement (the engagement was staged in the East Rand), I drove home to visit family, and I was beyond shocked.
I can't stress this enough: GO VOTE on Wednesday.
Our homes & the spaces we grew up in have been left to rot and ruin.
Every street pole has multiple electioneering posters, but the parks are filthy or dilapidated; the roads are a smorgasbord of potholes; and what used to be open land where we played as kids is now littered with unsafe temporary structures.
Where is the urban planning?
Where is bylaw enforcement?
Go vote!

The Ocean Cleanup is now $40M/year short of what’s needed to stop up to 1/3rd of all plastic flowing into the oceans by 2030.
That’s less than 1% of what America spends on Halloween decorations each year.
