I actually showed this in a special segment on @clickondetroit! Here’s the link to it… clickondetroit.com/features/…

Can you share your process? My children find them all the time and we would love to know how to polish them correctly

Correct. I sanded with sandpaper for many years before getting the cabber. It’s much faster this way, but I still got some nice results the “old fashioned” way…

Yea I'm saying you're not scrubbing the stone by hand. Back and forth. You're holding the stone to the wheel.

Yep…Michigan used to be near the equator under an ocean, where that coral lived. Then the continents drifted. When the glaciers carved out the Great Lakes, it broke up that fossilized coral, which now washes up on the Lake Michigan shoreline where I find them.

I’m 66, lived in MI as a kid and never heard of these. Interesting. Coral I assume?

As opposed to tumbling, I do hand sand and polish. If you mean using my cabber (that’s what the thing is called) versus sandpaper, you are correct.
Technically he didn't hand polish them

Sometimes! I hope to buy a saw next year and try slicing some…

Does the pattern continue thru the rock? If you sliced it vertically would you see the pattern on the insides? Looks like a fossilized turtle.

(12:00am Mon) A strong geomagnetic storm is in progress - northern lights have made down into Michigan! Here’s a photo posted on the Glendale App from Mackinaw City!

This is what I use. Each wheel from left to right is a progressively higher grit, and the thin white wheel on the far right is the one for polishing. Before I got this, I used 200 grit sandpaper, followed by 600 grit, followed by polishing with cerium oxide (polishing powder).
Replying to @GrossWeather
Same question as another commenter: what do you polish them with? Any type of rock tumbler?

Can’t tumble these bigger ones…they’re hand sanded and polished…this one took me about an hour.

Sports talk radio kept going on about rain all day … nope. Maybe the game gets scraped by a little surge coming north now but it’s not the soggy situation portrayed just a few days ago. Frustrating for planning purposes. Did manage to get in 5 band shows across America where 2 showed total rain and lightning risk all day. 1 got delayed but finished and the other missed rain by less than a mile but no flashes. If I went by pure models my rec woulda been : don’t even hold these shows. Just gotta roll with it and stick to the mesoanalysis

Sometimes, these Petoskey stones take a LOT of work. But boy is it worth the extra effort. Found this one yesterday…ended up becoming one of the best patterns I’ve ever had. 😍

And here’s something most people don’t know: most climate scientists have actually been CONSERVATIVE over the years in communicating this science. There is actually a potential that some projections could end up worse than what they have been saying.

I am sorry you are dealing with idiots here on X. Climate and weather is very important and should be taught. Climate change is real. This guy is right history is going to look crazy when looking back on these times we are in now. Humanity has put its head in the sand

Spot on, Spence. I’ve been monitoring the rain potential for the Lions today in Charlotte, and the high-res models have been all over the place (and many of them incredibly wrong) on this rain pattern. It’s tough explaining this stuff to them!
Replying to @GrossWeather
This notion of “balloons east only” in the AM then add more in the PM and toss up a few special launches has to be hurting. Then models “overcorrect” in the next run. I can say from doing events for specific locations on a map that CAMs were almost of no use many days this summer

I already said that I didn’t provide enough detail. That’s on me, not him. This is a clear attempt to suppress the teaching of a particular science due to political ideology. Now YOU can answer a question: what’s wrong with a climate change class being part of core curriculum? ➡️
Replying to @GrossWeather
What does science have to do with whether courses are being offered/taught? Did your professor say that Texas is preventing the science of climate change from being taught at its public universities. Yes or no? Is climate change still being taught? Yes or no. Prof lied!

(Cont.) The class was NOT required for non-STEM students, only an option. If they were interested and wanted to take the class as an elective, it counted toward their degree requirements. IT WAS A CHOICE. And if you dare say that was wrong, then your ideology is shining bright.

I’ve noticed the exact same thing this year, Tony. Sometimes, I still see remarkable disagreement among the multiple high-res models on the day of an event…more so than I can ever remember.
Something is up with the weather computer modeling. It has not been good. Things were supposed to get better fast with the integration of AI, but that has not been the case over the last few years. And I'm not talking just one model or just the long-range modeling...all of it! Now this might be my perception only. Someone way smarter than me can actually 'run the numbers'. 😁 Even the model that I think has been the 'best' over the last year (Canadian GDPS), did not handle the Nor'Easter very well. It's time to go back to old school, gut feeling forecasting over the winter... ❄️🚂

Unlike you, I don’t have an idealogical shell. I simply follow the science and report what the science says. It’s very clear from your language that you ARE speaking through an idealogical lens. Freedom of speech allows you to support this attempt at science censorship.
Replying to @GrossWeather
Because the professor didn’t provide enough detail to you? Because you fell for a ridiculous falsehood? No amount of pointing out your misinformation will break you out of your ideological shell. 😱 We are not back in medieval times & no one is being silenced. Such drama!🤪

NO I DIDN’T. I did not provide enough detail in my original tweet. That’s a BIG difference that you find convenient to ignore.
lol. He admitted the professor had mischaracterized what happened.

No amount of explanation will break you out of your ideological shell. Removing climate science from core curriculum classes means that students won’t get credit for the class toward their degree. It won’t count. So most students are therefore, unlikely to take the class. 🙄
Replying to @GrossWeather
Fortunately no one is being silenced since these courses are still being taught in Texas. Historians look favorably on people who don’t spread misinformation.
