Could a better understanding of groundwater, machine learning and new modelling transform flood risk mapping?
In the latest episode of #GroundwaterRising, host Helen speaks with @GeoSmartInfo CEO Mark Fermor about groundwater's role in flooding and the need for a more joined-up approach.

A great editorial in The Tribune regarding Water Bankruptcy in Haryana. Both states of #Punjab and #Haryana are facing severe #EnvironmentalCrisis. Policies are needed to counter and help in recharging of groundwater.
Feb-April outlook is for above normal #groundwater levels & #river flows in E Scotland & S England to persist, while in the rest of UK normal flows are likely to predominate with normal to above normal groundwater levels hydoutuk.net/latest-outlook/…
Seems that Egypt is playing a significant role in promoting & delivering #water cooperation between Nile Basin countries with a range of projects, including #groundwater source development, based (hopefully) on #IWRM study outputs egypttoday.com/Article/1/144…
This article suggests that, despite the cooperation highlighted in the preceding article, tensions over #water need resolution & transboundary agreements in place in the Nile Basin arabnews.com/node/2629811/am…

🙌 @OfficialZSL 'State of the Thames' report 👇 explains why more fish and more seals are in the Thames today. 'Protecting, reconnecting and restoring habitats across the Thames is key to building a resilient future for people and wildlife alike.' zsl.org/news-and-events/news…
The Thames may have been declared 'biologically dead' in the 1950s, but the estuary we see today demonstrates just how quickly things can change when decisive action is taken.
Our new State of the River Thames report celebrates recovery - but warns rising temperatures & pollution threaten progress.

Jan-Mar outlook indicates predominately normal #groundwater levels & #river flows across most of UK, except parts of SE England where normal to below normal levels & flows may persist, and some NW areas where normal to above normal flows are possible hydoutuk.net/latest-outlook/…
Offshore Freshened #Groundwater (#OFG). €2.0 million available from @jpioceans partners for "proof of concept” investigation of these potentially strategic resources for coastal #water security. Could #OFG be viable as a sustainable water resource? jpi-oceans.eu/en/joint-call-…
Outlook for Dec to Feb is that #groundwater levels & #river flows are likely to return to normal across most of the UK, except in the Chalk #aquifer areas of SE England & northern Scotland where normal to below normal levels are possible for next 3 months hydoutuk.net/latest-outlook/…
Sloane Square, London & the River Westbourne crossing the track in the green pipe bridge. One of the city's lost #rivers that also lost its #groundwater connection with the Gravel #aquifer. From a time when urban planning perspectives on the #water environment were very different
Nov-Jan outlook is for normal to below normal #groundwater levels across UK, perhaps low in E. England. Flow in groundwater-fed #rivers may remain below normal or low but normal to above in N&W UK. Limited rain may delay recovery in S&E until early 2026 hydoutuk.net/latest-outlook/…
800,000 year old, low salinity #groundwater found below Gulf of Corinth seabed. Helps understand global #water resources as pressure on water increases. Will it feature in future management plans? Must account for its role in coastal & marine ecosystems greekcitytimes.com/2025/10/2…
Worth a read on #water resources & #drought prognosis. England needs >100% average rainfall to recover by March. Significant geographical risk variation but a non-essential use ban by @sewateruk would see water restrictions & economic impact on businesses gov.uk/government/news/droug…
Upper reaches of #Thames remain dry for ~12km downstream from its source. No flow at Ewen, Somerford Keynes & Ashton Keynes but ~2km further downstream there are signs of recovery. As #groundwater levels begin to rise, slow #water flows appearing where #river was dry in Sept
With upper reaches of River #Thames still dry at Ashton Keynes & @metoffice Oct-Dec outlook for higher chance of dry weather in southern UK, will #groundwater & #river flow recovery be later this year than in 2022? Anyone with photos of Thames starting to flow in 2022?
Mapping where #water stress, #flooding, #groundwater decline & water quality threats collide is helping to explore how Nature-based Solutions #NbS can build #resilience for people & the environment when enabled by policy & finance, nature.org/en-us/what-we-do/…
Oct-Dec outlook: Below normal #river flow in groundwater-dominated catchments in S England & NE Scotland likely to persist. Potential for #groundwater recovery if significant rain over next 3 months. Elsewhere normal to above flows & groundwater likely hydoutuk.net/latest-outlook/…
